AST Aspeed AST2400 installation

Probably seems like a trivial question, but have just built another system for dev work. Has an onboard ast aspeed ast2400 video onboard. Have installed the xf86-video.ast package, but nothing seems to appear in /boot/modules. Usually use Radeon, for which there is a .ko kernel module, but not clear how to configure the ast to use. A search reveals nothing much.

Thanks.

I believe it should just work if the driver supports it. The only reason you need to load the drivers for the AMD, Intel, and Nvidea cards is because they are kernel modules installed from ports/pkg.

Have installed the xf86-video.ast package, but nothing seems to appear in /boot/modules.
x11-drivers/xf86-video-ast doesn't provide a kernel module, only a xorg module:

x11-drivers/xf86-video-ast/Makefile
Rich (BB code):
PLIST_FILES=    lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ast_drv.so

Usually use Radeon, for which there is a .ko kernel module, but not clear how to configure the ast to use.
You need to configure a xorg.conf(5) file, e.g.:

/usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ast.conf
Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "card0"
    Driver "ast"
EndSection
then try startx(1).

If that doesn't work out, look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Thanks, after an X -configure, copied to /etc/X11, we get errors, can't find the keyboard, can't find the display, but it is loading glx. Have seen this sort of thing before, so need to do some digging.

T_Daemon:

Thanks, the X init now recognises the video card. Run startx, blank screen, then get a keyboard error:

Quote:

"XKB: Failed to compile keymap
This could be a missing or iincorrect setup of xkeyboard-config."

Normally X -configure does work without a problem...

startx, keyboard error reported:

ld.elf.so.1 /lib/libc.so.7: version FBSD_1.9 required by /usr/local/bin/xkbcomp not found.

Failed to compile keymap

Yet,/lib/libc.so.7: is in /lib

Might be time to start again and reinstall.

n X -configure, copied to /etc/X11, we get errors
Don't create a extensive xorg.conf file from the beginning. Xorg, nowadays, is self-configuring itself. Remove the created file, put only the driver xorg configuration file I showed in post # 3. Try the extensive configured xorg.conf file if all other attempts fail.

If the system is booting UEFI, you can also try x11-drivers/xf86-video-scfb. Replace Driver "ast" with Driver "scfb" in the xorg conf. file.

Still no luck initializing xorg, look at the log file for errors.

Tried re install, but get the same results.

Normally, a standard install sequence is something like this

  • Install os
  • pkg add xf86-video-ast xorg xfce slim
  • sftp .xinitrc from another freebsd machine
  • Add dbus_enable="yes", and slim_enable="yes" to /etc/rc.conf
  • Reboot, and get a slim login
Won't work on this machine, a 1u high Supermicro X10SLH i3 compact, so
perhaps platform hardware issues ?

The annoying thing is that both Suse Leap and Xubuntu boot from media into the
install program recognising all hardware, but really don't want any systemd based
os. freebsd is the default here, for many years.

Edit: Sorry, missed the above reply meantime, i'll try that now.

Installed patches, and upgraded to 15.1:

freebsd-update fetch
freebsd update install
freebsd-update upgrade -r 15.1-RELEASE
freebsd update install

Reboot, and uname -a says 15.1

The error from startx is still quite clear:

ld-elf.so.1: /lib/libc.so.7 version FBSD_1.9 required by /usr/local/xkbcomp not found

But /lib does in fact, have that file, so is it the wrong version ?

Or, could this be a hardware platform issue ?.

Real time embedded for work here, and more of a FreeBSD user, but ZFS and jails are
the most usefull features of all.

You ran freebsd-update install only once, so only the kernel has been updated. Your userland is still 15.0. You need to run it at least twice (the instructions actually tell you this).

See freebsd-version -urk.

Thanks, that fixed it, so there must have been bug fixes between 15 and 15.1, even though 15 worked fine on two other machines here. One of the reasons i never install bleeding edge releases,, but wait until any issues have been flushed out.

so there must have been bug fixes between 15 and 15.1
Sure, but that has nothing to do with the issue you had. Packages in the FreeBSD repositories are now being built for 15.1 because 15.0 is EoL. Executables are backwards compatible, not forward. In other words it's fine to run an executable built on 15.0 on a 15.1 system, not the other way around.

That did fix the, but some settings on xfce don't work. Deleted the package, cleaned up and reinstalled, but same issue, so gave up and installed 15.1, which worked out of the box, with no file edits or other config needed. xfce on 15.1 has the same same issue: ie: won't change the background. Apparently a known bug, so looking to see if there is fix for it. Quite a saga, this has been and yet another reminder why I never upgrade anything until a major reinstall, once I have a stable system running. I know that's not the official line, but i've already spent a couple of days on this, despite the helping hand from this forum.

SirDice: Not being critical, and you will probably be horrified to hear that i'm still running 14.2 on the main server, but the last time I tried to upgrade that, it brought the whole system down, and had to rollback the root zfs pool, but do run fairly regular snapshots, so no damage done. Main data repository is on a separate pool, and just gets moved to any fresh install. As for packages, usually build from from port sources, but even those don't always work. Things move really fast in FreeBSD, so would there be a case for an LTS style release, with all the supporting ports etc ?. Would gladly contribute to something like that. financially, if not in dev time.

Just to add, on the ports issue. Had an instance recently where I needed to run an older version of mysql server Tried to build from source, but too many conflicting dependencies to build that under 14.2, In the end, installed the base system for 12.4 into a jail, running under 14.2, then used a mysql binary distro, which works fine..

The point being, that while the base system etc for earlier versions can be installed, there is no easy way to access the ports, since the binaries are not available. Effectively making earlier versions scrap. I know there are storage limits, but there must be a solution possible. . That's what I mean by LTS availability, in particular, port binaries. Is that possible ?.
