Is there a reason why people don't just run a tor socks proxy and point their firefox towards that (including DNS resolution as part of socks5)?

While that's obviously a possibility Tor browser is a bit more than a Firefox with a hardcoded Tor proxy. The main reason it's preferable over vanilla Firefox or really any other browser is to cripple fingerprinting.

Ah I see. I did just think it was an "easy to use" preconfigured Firefox (mostly for Windows users).

I guess I learn something new every day :)

This thread has been started for pointing to a more secure use of the Tor-Browser.

Unfortunately this thread has been kidnapped to propagate the opposite. I do feel angry about that.

To those who are not respecting basic forum netiquette I want strongly express to start their own new threads and stop such behavior.
