Solved 12+ seconds to start Xorg

Hi,

I am curious why Xorg sometimes takes over 12 seconds to start up.
I mean, the time from startx to my window manager ready-to-go (DWM) is 12 seconds or more, sometimes.
Sometimes, it's blazing fast, like only 3 seconds. I guess that 80% of time, it's 3 seconds fast. And 20% of time, it's 12 seconds slow. Before FreeBSD, my laptop (Lenovo T440P) was running Artix Linux with same DWM window manager, and Artix Linux would fire up Xorg blazing fast everytime.

I saved the Xorg.0.log when I noticed the slow start. In the log, there's a big delay at 59.658 sec. Is it something to do with my trackpad/trackpointer?

Here is the detail log if it helps...

Ok noiw I'll star ti ponm^Hder about your issue. Please be patient, hopefulley others have some non-void thoughts to help you, too.

I have a T400 with Switchable Graphics with Intel GMA 4500MHD and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470, using the Radeon chip by setting it to Discreet, running FreeBSD 12.2 RELEASE-p4.

This is the relative portion of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log from the start point cut to where it gets to Synaptics, Synaptics TouchPad and IBM TrackPoint at log finish in under 6 seconds. Where mine ends yours starts to have the problem and I show where:

There's where yours runs into trouble right after that point:

Code:
[ 84.604] (EE) event5 - SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: kernel bug: Touch jump detected and discarded.

Wayland libinput developers say it is a kernel bug.

But, I know the attitude of the Wayland libinput developers of saying "not our mistake" when they introduce bugs or break things.
I guess regular forum visitors have, for example, noticed how the long-running mouse wheel problems started to appear when Waylands' libinput was added into FreeBSD.
Regarding this, Wayland libinput developers say: We don't care. We won't fix that. Buy another mouse that (hopefully) works with libinput.

So I personally don't really buy their "kernel bug" story.
I rather consider it as a probable attempt of Waylands' libinput developers to deflect their responsibility to deal with glitches, which can appear with all input devices due to dirt, ESD and such.

Nevertheless:
The Wayland libinput people kindly ask affected trackpad users to file a bug report.
No guarantees though, that they won't close your PR with the reason "WONTFIX" or even "NOTABUG" and tell you to buy another laptop.

Trihexagonal, the point of interest is that (assuming the OP is not trying to fool us) the startup time varies significantly. Let's go the scientific way to adress this, ok?

Let's go the scientific way to adress this
I know that this may be not very scientific, but when I got a replacement HD for my Thinkpad, I'll try to find out how easy it is to reproduce the "bug", by simulating a nervous user giving the touchpad a rough time, while impatiently waiting for the system to booting up. 😁

based on Xorg.0.log, my startx command was issued at 46.268 sec. Xorg was writing alot of ouput to log until 47.394 sec. there is no log output between 47.395 and 59.658 sec. So there is this 12 sec gap. i assume there is some problem here.

59.712 sec is the last entry for Xorg startup. i assume this is when the DWM is starting.

i believe Xorg and DWM are finished startup at around 60 sec.

i believe at 84.604sec is when my finger first touch the trackpad or the trackpoint.

by the way, the trackpad and trackpoint are both working fine for me in Freebsd, despite the error messages in log.

One reason, i switched to Freebsd was because my trackpoint in Linux would lock up frequently.

I realize English is not your Native Language but am beginning to question your reading comprehension.

You do see I used scientific methodology to address it by example in comparison of my T400 log and his T440 log, pointed out where the problem occurred and what it was, don't you?

Just because he gave some background stating he had previously used Linux on the box, I don't ever automatically assume somebody is trying to pull one over on us by asking a question. Not when they've done some work to see what could possible be the problem and just haven't got the experience to figure it out themselves yet.

It will become obvious in time if they're playing a game and I don't see it yet so have no reason but to try and help him as much as I can without being disparaging about it.

There is plenty of time for that if it comes down to it but give the person a fair chance first. I always feel better about it if I do and they disappoint me.

I'll attach my full log as a .txt file but you can see the longest delay was less than 2 seconds between steps:

i havent tried to do anything to the trackpad/trackpoint...because they both are working fine. Maybe there is some pkg i need to install or something. i have not even done any research on this topic.

edit: Is this another test? I noticed the dates above in the fgrep output are old, from March 1.

Everyone here is playing a guessing game without information.
Please, master, take over.
FMLU, the BeaSD is riding on bare metal. Whereas the 12+ seconds occasional delay is beyond my power to explain coherences where they're not, but s/t fools believe me.

Okay...so I assume I need to extract only the data from the last BOOT out of /var/log/messages. So I did, and I then did fgrep again.

[ 46.299] (EE) Failed to load module "intel" (module does not exist, 0)

Looks like you have set a Xorg configuartion that you want to use the intel module instead of modesetting.

This needs x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel to be installed.

Code:
[    46.298] (II) LoadModule: "intel"
[ 46.299] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module intel

i already tried xf86videointel pkg, a while back. Graphics didnt work quite right with this package. Very slow youtube video (lots of frame drop).
and system locked up sometimes.
so i delete that pkg. and graphics working fine without it.

i think it is usiing modesetting.

Please excuse me to be a little late. I run x11-wm/dwm on three old machines with three different graphic cards. It starts within a few seconds, may be about 3 seconds. As far as I remember it never took longer.

Just FYI, the xf86-video-intel driver is only for chips after i740 and before i915.

# supported by xf86-video-intel
my $intelpciid_oldintel = {
'7121' => 'i810',
'7123' => 'i810-DC100',
'7125' => 'i810E i810E2',
'1131' => 'i815 i815E i815G i815EG AGP mode',
'1132' => 'i815 i815E i815G i815EG GFX mode',
'2562' => 'i845G i845GL i845GV',
'3577' => 'i830M i830MG',
'2572' => 'i865G i865GV',
'3582' => 'i852GM i852GME i852GMV',
'358E' => 'i854',
'3582' => 'i855GM i855GME',
};

If I read your logs correctly, you are using the fb driver.

So I believe the correct driver is /boot/modules/i915kms.ko. (add to kldlist, kldload to onestart)
graphics/drm-kmod might also need to be installed.
