Solved 11.2 on Celeron N3150 fails to boot

Hi all,

I just got this Zotac zbox 323 nano, wanted to install FreeBSD or a NAS version on it.

An USB-Stick with FreeBSD 11.1 boots successfully.

A NAS4Free Stick with version 10.x did boot.
Doing an update on that, failed to boot.
They just renamed their project, so the image I used is called XigmaNAS-x64-embedded-11.2.0.4.5748.

Using the option "failsafe", got some output, it started to boot, the last messages had been:

Code:
...
atrtc0: <AT realtime clock> at port 0x70 irq8 on isa0
atrtc0: registered as a time-of-day-clock, resolution 1.000000s
atrtc0: Can't map interrupt
atrtc0: <AT timer> at port 0x40 on isa0
Timecounter "i8254" frequency 1193182 Hz quality 0
attimer0: Can't map interrupt
fdc0: cannot reserve interrupt line
ppc0: cannot reserve I/O port range
...

panic: no usable event timer found!

The other attempts, using a stick to update from FreeBSD 11.1 to 11.2, or a newly downloaded FreeBSD-11.2-RELEASE-amd64-mini-memstick.img image did not get further than:
Code:
/boot/kernel/kernel ...

Booting...

Here from running FreeBSD 11.1 the dmesg, lspci, lsusb, if that is of any help:
Code:

A NAS4Free Stick with version 10.x did boot.
Doing an update on that, failed to boot.
They just renamed their project, so the image I used is called XigmaNAS-x64-embedded-11.2.0.4.5748.
This is not supported here: PC-BSD, FreeNAS, NAS4Free, and all other FreeBSD Derivatives

We can help with a plain, supported, FreeBSD install. But I'm at a total loss what you currently have or what you're trying to install.

These messages don't look good:
Code:
ACPI APIC Table: <ALASKA A M I >

ACPI BIOS Warning (bug): 32/64X length mismatch in FADT/Gpe0Block: 128/32 (20170303/tbfadt-748)
Have you tried updating the BIOS/UEFI of the machine?

I did update the BIOS.

Well, on plain FreeBSD 11.2, the screen only shows "Booting..." with this usually turning dash, that does not even turn.

Great, thank you very much, SirDice.

This really booted the minimemstick image.

I did not install FreeBSD using UEFI up to now.
Always had to use legacy, even gpart with lenovofix.

So now I have to look how that UEFI is going to work to get installed.

Interestingly, I see those same two messages on a Celeron J1900 board (ASRock Q1900[DC]-ITX, as I recall) running 11.1-RELEASE (that has similar challenges with booting an 11.2-RELEASE kernel in "BIOS" mode)
Code:

I'll check for an updated BIOS for the system later on.

Well, the installed version boots with UEFI.

But, I cannot do a reboot.

While doing a reboot, it hangs at the boot screen, where it shows
"Press <DEL> to enter setup.
Press <F8> to enter Popup BBS menu."

Only after I pull the power cable, does it go further than that place.
And boots up again.

I can put a dmesg of that now:

user@machine:~ %

To bring an update on that.

That machine does reboot. Only it takes some time, once I looked, about 2 minutes showing the bios screen.
Further, it does boot in 11.2 and in 12.0 with bios/legacy.

But it does not give screen output after showing "Booting...
\"

It shows problems with other systems, too.
Some old Linux, I still have on a stick, Knoppix 7.2.0 from 2013 does give no output after startx.
So, after booting FreeBSD 11.2 and logging in via ssh, I suspect the problem to be shown in this line:
Code:
VT: init without driver.

Here the full dmesg:
