I've been away from the various *BSD for a while but decided I wanted to try some development work in FreeBSD.
I'd like to do that dev. work in a desktop installation running as a guest under VMware Fusion (on MacOS).
So I downloaded 12.2 and installed in a new VM. Installation went mostly OK...
In a FreeBSD 12.2-RELEASE-i386 installation with xorg xfce lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter, while I can do kldload i915kms I need to install xf86-video-intel to run LightDM, also I need xf86-input-synaptics to work the touchpad.
I didn't find any reference in the handbook of why this is...
I'm trying to get lightdm to start mate, but every time I log in I see two error boxes pop up, and then get kicked back to the login screen. More detail is given on the console:

I'm using lightdm with lightdm-gtk-greeter, and after an hour configuring it,
I didn't found a way to have the users list displayed at startup.
BTW, dbus and hald are started, greeter-hide-users is false.
