A tech talent here to calculate power for an UPS?

Hi all, I have ordered a Synology with 6 disks. I need to buy a UPS to protect it. As I understand zero about electricity (I miss that part of my brain) it is all very confusing; I seem not to be allowed to simply add up the watts of the disks and the synology, but I need to look at volts and...

HOWTO: Install, backup and restore a reliable FreeBSD 8.2 system

That was an extreme amount of work; thank you very much for it. I will try to use it one day, when I have enought guts :D

    UFS Backup

I beg to differ, there is a manual for $ dump -0Lauf /path/to/backups/ad0s1d.dump /dev/ad0s1d as well, to name just one. But no problem I will do it myself.

    UFS Backup

Thanks for writing this tutorial; I plan to use it step by step when I have enough nerves to try it :e But on googling around there are also some remarks about first steps that you perhaps might want to include so your post becomes a 'really really really contains every step' guide? For...

    Microsoft Silverlight

Hmmm. After a patch that has been made available this error is now gone: ERROR: The "libmoonplugin-ff3bridge.so" in WEBPLUGINS_FILES is either a typo or no longer exists. Please make a bug report to mono@FreeBSD.org (maintainer). However, installing the plugin itself in Firefox still isn't...

DVD burner: burns/reads fine, but doesn't boot

Thanks for your reply Wblock; it turns out one way of the other the drive was defective. A friend came over and changed it with a spare drive; that simply worked.

    This forum: horribly slow?

I know what the problem is: this site is running on Windows Server. Could I suggest changing it to another OS? I can recommend FreeBSD, it is very solid. :e

DVD burner: burns/reads fine, but doesn't boot

Good morning :e This is weird: I have a Samsung DVD-writer that burns and reads DVDs fine but doesn't boot a DVD (no matter which DVD I insert). In the bios the settings are normal, and it used to work the way it should. Just suddenly it stopped. Is this defective or could it be something...

    This forum: horribly slow?

Hi all, Is it only me or is this forum horribly slow for the last couple of days? Changing a page easily takes 10 seconds. I don't have this on any other forum.

    Microsoft Silverlight

The thing is, for my work I have to watch clips with interviews and stuff. Half the web does this in Flash, half does it in Silverlight. Flash I have working under FreeBSD, Silverlight I have not. If I want to completely ditch XP for FreeBSD (which I really want) I will have to find a way to...

    Microsoft Silverlight

After a quite impressive installation of packages (tons of them) as well as a port upgrade to the latest versions of these packages, I remain with two errors: -snip- Making install in sdk gmake[1]: Entering directory `/usr/ports/multimedia/moonlight/work/moonlight-2.2/sdk' gmake[2]...

    Microsoft Silverlight

I am poking around with this also. Aside from the fact that it installs a ton of packages (this can't be right, can it?) it doesn't yet work. It installs so many packages that the forum says:

    Your advice: cups or lpd?

Time for a noob question again :P (:e) On following the hand book for lpd I do: grep ppc1 /var/run/dmesg.boot (ppc0 turned out not be installed). I get: ppc1: <NetMos NM9805 1284 Printer port> port 0xe800-0xe807,0xe480-0xe487,0xe400-0xe407,0xe080-0xe087,0xe000-0xe007,0xdc00-0xdc0f irq 17 at...

    Your advice: cups or lpd?

Thanks to all :D Since it's a rather old HP Laserjet 6P, I think I should go with lpd based on what I read.

    Your advice: cups or lpd?

Thanks for your reply; appreciated. I doubt I see myself printing a webpage via CLI :P :e No, seriously, I want to simply print either a *.pdf, *.doc or a web page or something like that without hassle, so click 'print' on some fancy icon and be gone with it.

    Your advice: cups or lpd?

Hi all :P Having gone through the most horrible ports upgrade experience I have ever seen (from start to finish multiple weeks, finally got there thanks to the extremely patient help of a member here, thanks again a thousand times ;)), I am now a happy owner of 8.1 with all ports upgraded to...
