still issues with QGIS (aka the arlésienne...)

dear all,
i am now running `FreeBSD punkspresso 15.1-RELEASE-p4 FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p4 releng/15.1-n283627-db6066678b33 GENERIC amd64` on a asus laptop (about 10yo), under x.org and i3 wm.
/graphics/qgis is one of the software i use most (i'm a forest manager) and it pains me to see that there are so many issues to have it work properly. currently it crashes with a qgis.core at start-up, not even during usage as was sometimes the case before.

my (limited) understanding is that there is an issue with python (as qgis relies heavily on pythons, also for its plugin system), notably because the vanilla pkg install of python disable the _sqlite3 extension which is necessary for qgis. one has to do his own installation of a modified port of python for that. however, for version prior to qgis 4.2.x it was only an issue with some plugins. could it be the reason for the crash? i do not know...

i would very much like to help in fixing this, however i doubt i am technical enough to be in a maintainer team :/
if the qgis maintainer happens to read this (i sent him an email but no answer) please reach out and let me know how i can help!

i guess i could try to recompile qgis from the port tree but i am reluctant to do that because it'll block my machine for a whole weekend :/ and i usually end up changing a lot of stuff to make it work and then i don't recall and it's a global. i need guidance!!!

well, that was my message in the bottle, hope someone reads it.
cheers, have a good weekend everyone.

In my opinion, the simplest approach is to open a bug report in the Git repository. A search for the words "crash+python" yields over 1,000 open issues; perhaps your problem is already listed there:

Furthermore, contacting the maintainer directly is not the best idea; that is what Bugzilla is for: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla.

Regards
thanks for the advice. i'll look into the git repo.
i works fine on my other laptop (with arch) though... so i felt it was a freebsd specific issue.

It is likely that some of its dependencies got updated but qgis didn't got rebuild, or that a build failed. Looking at https://portsfallout.com/fallout/1379998/ it appears that it failed to extract the source code.
After a good rebuild, the crash happens here:

So yes it crash during python stuff. In the meantime, if you can work without python, it started for me like this:
qgis --nopython

ah, it indeed starts... but many functions are unavailable.
it is often an issue with python and qt i noticed.
let's hope it's gonna be solved soon.

there is also the issue about python built without sqlite3 in pkg, i tried to build it from the ports but i failed.
i guess i'm not strong enough with my kungfu yet :/
