Solved Release 14.4 update to 14.5 or upgrade to 15.1

Greetings all,

I have been using release 14.X from 14.1, but updating today, I received a warning regarding upcoming EOL. As I do not anticipate to add/change hardware, should I continue with updating to 14.5 or bite a bullet and upgrade to 15.1, given that I will eventually do the upgrade next year?

Maybe a different way to ask the question, given the unchanged hardware, is the 15.1 mature enough that I will not have a problem?

Kindest regards,

M

Hi gotnull,

thank you for the link. When I did a search, I got the (obviously incorrect) information that 14.5 ending support in 06/2027 is the end of the 14.X.

Kindest regards,

M

It might sounds stupid to repeat this as you are not a beginner but still, if you decide to make the big jump and upgrade to 15.X, do not forget to read the release notes and instructions especially if you want to adopt pkgbase, it's a big change and the road can be a bit bumpy sometimes, hence the notes and handbook ;)

My 2 cents, if you decide to switch to pkgbase, upgrade to 15 via freebsd-update then convert it to pkgbase, not the other way around. Based on the tests I've done on VM it's simpler like this, and that's exactly how I did it for my server, it worked well.
That being said I keep my RPI on 14.X and it's also fine.

Good luck ;)

I just upgraded from 14.4 to 14.5. So I'm wondering, how stable is 15.x. I still seem to be seeing a few bug reports commented on in this forum, eg with the packaging system. Is it time to make the jump?

From my point of view, it's okay, my server is at @home serving files through NFS, running VMs via bhyve and Jails via bastille.
I did not witness bugs, but it doesn't mean it's bug free for others.
Just remember to manage Boot Environment yourself (before any pkg upgrade!) because it's not done automatically by pkgbase like freebsd-update used to do (the feature is not implemented yet).
Other than that, for me it's stable enough, with pkgbase things feel a bit different (for jails and package management), but people will get used to it I think.

Hi gotnull,

thank you for the reminder, although I have been using FeeBSD on servers since version 7 or 8, I do not consider myself an expert, since I seem to have good luck b following the instruction, and getting help on this forum if I have a problem.

Will the freebsd-update, freebsd-upgrade eventually disappear? I do not seem to remember to ever having a problem. Just like now, the upgrade to 14.5 went flawlessly.

Hi blackbird9,

seems like we have the same concern, not about the upgrade, but the stability, because it was my impression reading the forum, that version 15.X was more problematic than others.

Kindest regards,

M

Some people will have problems with anything new. It was the kmods, then the package base thing. Others will have problems not knowing about changes made to a package or they just did something wrong. Which release you are using rarely has anything to do with it. 15.1 can be installed without using package base; but it needs to be learned. You just don't have to do it today.

Having to wait for a RELEASE to stabilize is from decades gone by. Or Linux. Or Windows. As I said elsewhere, when a new RELEASE comes out, I upgrade and get it over with. I just don't have problems.
