fun thread.

Horny parents. That is why I am here.

Being less sarcastic and more to the point...
TLDR; UNIX philosophy of doing one thing and do it well.

Just today I contemplated my NAS situation. It is non-existent, being stingy bastardo.
What I want from NAS is network storage and low wattage, verging on zero if I don't need it at the moment.
TrueNAS Core would be a perfect fit.
Alas because Docker and because people apparently like the idea of putting all eggs in one basket, it is now custom Linux blob.
So, FreeBSD is phased out and with it the native ZFS in kernel - the main reason for NAS....to keep the filesystem close to the chest.
Also, similar to firewalls, running VMs and jails, let alone Docker third party apps on the same CPU is very bad idea. Especially in the age of container escapes every other day.
Do I want my firewall or private boudoir photos Immich app running in the same memory and CPU as some git repo python utility? No, I do not.

So, my cunning plan is to buy UGREEN NAS box, put vanilla FreeBSD on it and with the help of HAL2000 AI set up some sane ZFS pools, pf rules and SMB config.
Jellyfin with GPU passthrough will have to go somewhere else and feed the movies over network, as well as latest Immich and NextCloud.
TailScale and AdBlock can live on firewall box.

I also use FreeBSD because it's the OS that offers me the best performance according to my experience.

I also like the UNIX philosophy.

This is the only forum I'm a member of.

I like to learn things that make sense and FreeBSD is one of the most logically reasonable and sensible OSs as far as my knowledge about computers go.

Secondly, I like the idea of the capability to be able to tell large corporations that I don't need their services if I don't like what they are doing. (I was a Windows user up until last year, rediscovered Linux, then learned about FreeBSD), and with FreeBSD/ZFS it REALLY feels good to have a grasp on my data as I organize it on the filesystems AND the general storage topography.

Thirdly, Simply the community/Documentation is so good.

And to the Ai trainning data. Especially nowadays when the scraping and learning pipeline is automated (yeah, ironically, machine learning engineers were automated away the first).
You can have your wisdom imprinted on the new species one day or rather added to the super-compressed memory stick.

Man, do you ever think about anything other than AI?

Besides declaring my crumbs (www.thecrumbs.org) public domain, I also explicitly authorized their use for research and machine learning, so I'm fine with that.

Proprietary, closed source software screwed the pooch, regarding Ai/natural language UI.
a] It is UI heavy - UI will change the most and they will use their appeal
b] Ai is trained and can best develop new features or make changes on OpenSource - they will be struggling

I am a little worried about the lack of Ai "developer" tools for FreeBSD, tho.
On the other hand, running wonky agent harness riddled with npm backdoors in Linux VM but on FreeBSD host seems like the best combo for isolation - container escape is far more difficult to different OS (RAM mapping) host, be it VM in bhyve or jail via linuxlator. For interaction with host, proper MCP and channel is needed.

I'm not. Write it yourself! :) To hell with 'AI'.

From the first moment you start asking an AI to write the code for you, you stop learning, start deskilling yourself, and start becoming dependent... which inevitably leads to you paying them cash.

Someone I know told me recently, that the latest thing in a company he knows, is for the employees to spend their own wages, out of hours, when they are at home in the evening, paying an AI to write code for their work assignments; in order to try to prove to the boss they are more 'productive' than their fellow programmers. Then they take the code into work in the morning and pretend they wrote it themselves. They are literally using their own paychecks to pay for the AI to write code, so the boss can make money. In other words, sheer desparation and fear of unemployment. (On the plus side, it's probably more reliable than 'microdosing' acid! 😄 )

I meant the coding harnesses like opencode, pi, hermes etc.
FreeBSD is left out. Sadly, because I would prefer it to be the underlying OS - jails, zfs would make it more secure and managable.
Also letting it generate pf rules is better on bare metal - not copying through putty, cutting yourself off because Ai dream about electric sheep or something.

We are entering Calculator debate.
Stephen Wolfram had interesting insight. If you calculate integrals by hand, it is all very nice but you can only do a few that way. If you use a program, you can observe the behavior of thousands of integrals. Thus more likely to understand what it is really all about.

Similar to understanding programming. You change program and observe how the output changes. That is how I learned. But I was limited by time - had to copy the code from a book in early days even.

Reducing real world problem in to algorithm is the goal. Diagram used to be what educators made us do first. After that the exact language syntax is mostly irrelevant if the machine (compiler or Ai) can generate it. I never learned punch cards. And did exactly one line of opcode - cracking some floppy disk copy protection (condition for bad sector detection)

Employer is employer because he provides tools for you. If you bring your own excavator, you are contractor, not employee.
This gets murky in cyber or intellectual space. I know people who refuse to do stuff until company pays for education i.e. learning new MS Word.
It is weapons race. Similar to what I experienced in high school. People using cheat-sheets got better grades and the tests got increasingly difficult. Ended up with everyone having elaborate cheat-sheets for every subject and the tests got so bulky, you were just copying without thought.

Excavators exist. Do you want to remain a shovel digger? Buy excavator and over night excavate the patch you will be digging tomorrow.

Ban excavators, sabotage them or find yourself better job and dig holes on weekends as hobby. It is useful survival skill during diesel fuel shortage. So is archery, horse riding, fire making, map reading, trap constructing and in head multiplication.

I do think about History and Moral philosophy topics too.
And I have other topics, not suitable for this forum, concerning Ataraxia for example. I am renaissance man...from Temu.

Ai does occupy my mind, tho.
I am professionally between tthree milestones.
One is people having unrealistic expectations of Ai (e.g.: want to feed the whole SIEM in to it a naturel).
Second are preparing Butlerian Jihad against thinking machines.
Third are playing ostrich, sticking their head in sand refusing to acknowledge that despite all the quirks, massive change is upon us.
(Even if it is all just BS chat autocomplete, it won't stop the money makers to put it everywhere. Same they did with cloud and outsourcing to India. Will it work? No. But it will look good on paper. And you better navigate new waters with good map).
