Solved Says 14.5 is available but freebsd-update fetch says no

Got an email saying that 14.5-RELEASE is up for grabs.

But I just ran freebsd-update fetch, and it says no updates needed to update system to 14.4-RELEASE-p9.
 
freebsd-update fetch is for patch updates, not version upgrades. freebsd-update {...} upgrade only downloads what is needed, sets up various merges and basically prepares for the upgrade, it does NOT install or modify anything yet.
 
Ok, I was upgrading to 14.5, and somehow it upgraded my userworld to 16.0-CURRENT. So confused now. How could that have happened? I may have mixed something up and ended up compiling kernel 16.0, but why would freebsd-update use that to upgrade me to 16.0 when I asked for -r 14.5-RELEASE? Could that have been it?
 
You can't use freebsd-update(8) to upgrade to 16.0-CURRENT, it only allows -RELEASE versions, not -STABLE, not -CURRENT. So that's impossible to have happened.

I'm betting you cloned the source tree without switching branches, i.e. you checked out the main branch. git -C /usr/src checkout releng/14.5
 
It was nastier. I had releng/14.4 checked out. Then I tried to check out releng/14.5, but I originally only cloned the 1 branch with --depth 1. So I had to unshallow it and do some git config steps, and then I rolled back BE and screwed something up, so I ended up compiling 16.0-CURRENT because it all got messed up. Then it was showing userworld 16.0, kernel 16.0 and running kernel 14.5, so crazy. I have to start from scratch.
