Good bad experiences with social media "mastodon" & "bluesky" compared to "Reddit"

Or an L39 20mm Anti-tank rifle... like this one. One of these things could definitely spoil your afternoon. Recommended weapon for all freebsd forum sysadmins. :-)

I always felt a bit sorry for that poor old wile e. coyote when he ran off the cliff into thin air and then hung there for a couple of seconds before plunging down... and the bloody roadrunner pokes his tongue out and "beep beep" and zooms off... 😁
 
The good things about Mastodon:
- There's no endless scroll.
- You can actually control your feed.

I removed my account because:
- It's an echo chamber for people trying to out-left each other. A rage machine. A wannabe Communist bar.
- Lots of accounts mirror their content on X anyway.
 
According to wiki they also used to use the L39 as an improvised anti-aircraft gun. This photo gives you an idea of the size of this thing. Highly accurate, apparently. You would not want to be on the receiving end.

Reddit does have its share of the uninformed masses, but it's also where the FreeBSD Core Dev team hangs out and communicates. "Funny" thing about Reddit is, you can sign into it with a Google account (which most of us actually have if we use Android phones or Gmail).

I already have over a hundred accounts in different places, I have to keep track of them with an app that I carefully shopped for (no cloud storage, no ads, no add-ons for puchase). And I don't wanna keep adding useless accounts to that collection just to look up something once in a blue moon.

Mastodon actually sounds like an interesting place to me, but I have to ask, is it worthwhile for me to jump through the hoops of account maintenance and password recovery? I keep remembering the bad experience I had with Discord, where I called someone out for not staying on topic of the conversation. So I have to ask, is the information and/or entertainment I derive (from actually having an account somewhere), does that outweigh the potential downsides that come with the territory?
 
I really like Reddit Shortwave/SDR/Antenna pages and for Robots there are some OK ones.
Generally I feel Reddit is a net positive. I don't use it for FreeBSD advice but I am not opposed to visiting.

With esoteric R/C Ardupilot questions I see Facebook Groups coming up with good stray content via StartPage
As a non-subscriber I can only see so much but it has been worthy chasing.

I do not need new things like bluesky and mastadon. No urge to try them.
I do not care for the unhinged X because it is has terrible commentary. It is the cesspool of open speech.

How about people who give money on "Go Fund Me"? Are you nuts? So many scams social causes or fake or ignorant outrage. Saddening.
People want to help. Is money the really right way?

I got a 48GB Gold collection on a NAS :cool:
I self-hosted Friendica for a while and used to mirror over to FB and Twitter before API changes, but like it better with no external connections. I can say whatever I want and other federated instances can interact.

Arguing online doesn't usually lead to good results; I host an instance just to show-off what I do :p It's also cooler to host a social media network vs having an account on someone else's :cool:

The "Coyote vs Acme" movie that is coming out in a month may be very funny. It may also be awful, but even awful is acceptable if it has coyotes, road runner, bunnies, porky pig, the big chicken, and tweety bird.

Well yeah, that's the whole point of that character:
He's funny because he gives a bad example of how not to behave. That's called a caricature. That's why he's a cartoon skunk. This could also very simply be seen by he always confuses cats with skunks.
Urgently must ban "The Three Stooges" - way too much danger somebody's head could be hit by a ladder.
Explaining that to the own children was the right way to do it. Not placing them infront of a TV, not caring, and then demand a decent education by TV.
A society not grasping caricatures, satire or irony anymore is actually in very deep trouble. Very stupid in fact. Education failed completely on the most important topics.

If only decent stuff is allowed, because else wouldn't be understood right, then better first ban all shooting, killing, crimes, brawls, drug usage, car chases, demolitions from all screens, at least before fun is banned.
But above all very first ban anybody incalculably talking weird, incomprehendable, contradictory, antithetic BS, lies, aggressive threats and blackmails. Somebody spontaneously come to my mind.
Such are actually really very dangerous to completely confuse a society that is not educated enough to even grasp Pepé anymore.

Le sigh.

I doubt, that's a good idea.
Recently on vacation our flat had three huge "Google" TV sets.
I plugged in a flashdrive containing some movies I brought to watch on a rainy day.
We watched Walt-Disney's "The Jungle Book" from 1967. It was the first and last movie I watched on that.
This piece of crap of a TV set rendered this old movie way up to Ultra HD - with AI I guess.
Terrible. It was no fun to watch at all.
Annoying artifacts when the rendering made errors had been already enough to spoil the pleasure.
But most of the images were way too sharp. Sterile. All warmth, atmosphere, charm removed.
Also the sound was sterile. No groove jumped over. While the music is the best part of this movie. (IMO best Disney movie's music ever. [the rest sucks.])
Terrible. Just terrible.
If I watch some modern animated movie, produced for HD, e.g. "Soul", then well, yeah: please!
But let the old things be as they were. You're not doing yourself any favour.
Rendering some 30...80 years old movies or TV series up to Ultra HD, or adding color to a black & white movie, just kills them.
That's like creating an image of like the "Mona Lisa" was fotographed instead of view and admire the painting as it is.

My experience on Reddit our good. You can find me on r/aspergers. The drawback, i'm not on Reddit to create noise, but the AutoMods & the Mods use draconial rules. Many posts got deleted.Example, I posted on r/askpsychology , "how are computers used in modern psychology", and it got immediately deleted. The good is also a bad sometimes.
& You must be a professional psychologe or as none, make reference in your post to a clinical study.
Like i said the good is also a bad sometimes.

A few times I thought to re-create an account after seeing a question or post that'd benefit from info, but then automod rules want to bar new accounts (it's somehow expected to lurk on a platform and post nothing for 2 weeks as some sign of good-will 😆)

Psychology and Psychiatry treatment can only work in real life's personal contact with real people.
The human mind and above all human communication, especially all unconscious and subtle forms of communication - and there is more, way more than most people can think of - are by far way too broad and complex as some narrow banded media like any kind of online platform, particulary text only ones, can be worth doing a job.
That was like trying to work on your computer's hardware with a hammer only.

I can comprehend Aspergers and Autists avoid people.
I also hate it to be in some overstimulated crowd in the mood of a rampaging herd of cattle.
But there is a difference of meeting a decent, calm, understanding, tolerant person in a quiet park, or being in a carnival.
Sitting alone at a table in a café, looking at same nice landscape, playing with the sparrows and reading a book is in any case better than isolating infront of a computer and getting lost in "social" media.
That's why I love to play golf: good walks in lots of landscape, while calm and peace are essential to the game. It's kind of meditation, log-off and recreation. And you meet very few, calm people, you may talk to or only greet them at most.

Which is shocking and disrespectful to this forum and FreeBSD. Consider that Reddit gets one or two threads a day with one or two replies, and this forum gets that many and more in an hour. Why is this forum ignored? I mentioned that to Deb Goodkin and she showed up here a few times and that was it.

Colin Percival, for starters. You'd know if you pay attention and actually put in some effort to correlate the core team roster published on the main freebsd.org site with the the names of people communicating about actual FreeBSD development on r/freebsd.
