Good bad experiences with social media "mastodon" & "bluesky" compared to "Reddit"

I've checked out some German mastodon instances - the article format is like X, so no longer discussions possible, as the text length is limited.
Most posts are the general social media crap (pictures of the user's cats, rants about weather etc.) or political BS (mostly anti-capitalist and far-left).
Not much technical or otherwise interesting stuff.
 
Let's say i want to discuss justice system in society, but only with arguments, for instance, "prisoners are not prepared to live in society, and this is because of conflict of interest". When they re-enter prison , it gives work and public money to justice and judges, and private money to lawyers, who become next judges.
Would Mastodon work or not ?

I'm totally uninterested in cats , well maybe just as a background of pc , not as a feed.
I'm totally uninterested in political opinions, and certainly not when an opinion is made beforehand.
 
Technically it will, but it is not possible to post longer answers unless splitting them into multiple posts.
I haven't seen forum-like discussions there.

And most people there think they live in a "safe space" where unwanted facts or opinions are not welcome.
Be prepared to tick people off when discussion controversial topics. :-)
 
I was going to start a thread about this but I'll post it here instead.

Far too often I read a blog and, at the end, the owner has a list of all their social contact places. And there are a lot of them! Mastadon, Bluesky, X, Facebook and more which makes me question how anyone gets things done or keeps track of them all or why they feel the need for most or any of them.

In my case, I visited Mastadon last week to see if someone was there. I forgot I had an account already. I do not have a Bluesky account. I do have X but only go there when someone links me to it. I only have a Facebook account cause relatives told me to get one maybe eight years ago but I only go there every couple of weeks in case someone accidentally posts a cat video. And you KNOW my feelings about the dolts on reddit. There are probably others and I KNOW someone will create another cause they were dissed somewhere or politically upset somehow in the same way Bluesky came about.

In my case, I have little interest in ongoing, continuous conversations on these platforms that wind up having nothing to do with why I was there in the first place. That was the first thing I noticed when I went to Mastadon. The people online at the time were having some conversation about something I don't know and wasn't interested in finding out.

Conversations here can go off the rails but there is no tug to sit here for hours keeping them going. I can post this rant, walk away, and not feel like I'm going to miss anything when I come back. I also don't worry about some numb nut calling me names and other adjectives to make themselves feel better about themselves which is the sole purpose of 80% of Redditors.

Type #cat in the search box you find cats stuff, type #arm you find arm discussions, simple as that.
If you scroll an instance messages then you'll find any kind of stuff, mostly things that you are not interested in, that's why you have to filter messages with #whatever
That's the main problem on those platforms, you "follow" persons rather than subject, searching something specific is not ideal.

note on reddit :

one can find me r/autism, never had any adjectives.
Opposite, today i receive on it : You got all my respect and you right not everyone have to accept everything but you a strong person because after this age you still take care of yourself

i stay largely away from things like r/politics :)
 
Banned where? In Belgium? In the US the problem isn't inclusiveness, in the US he's frowned upon because he didn't worry about consent. But as you imply, these forums aren't the place to discuss it.

For discussions Mastodon/Twitter/X/Bluesky are probably one of the worst possible medium, because they favors slogan-like messages, and worse with a "in-public" effect. They are good for sharing facts and information. For discussions, forums or chats are better.

Mastodon is not bad as idea. It is like a blog where you follow only people posting interesting things to you, and if they boost other posts, you see them. So, it is not invasive like X. It is an RSS on steroids.

I like Bluesky as technology, but your homepage with feeds is dominated by the decisions of other algorithms. But it is fully customizable, and the tech seems very good. Better than Mastodon.

Socials are like junk-food: rarely the time spent on them is quality time. But sometime you find useful info.
 
Again, before either of us ragebait someone disagreeing, this ain't the place to talk about it. :) (Not a criticism, just saying why I'm sorta not answering you.)
 
People should abandon all central account servers and demand full control of consumer computers. All tunctionality of social media already existed as TCP/IP except the spy/track features. It's an entirely arfificial market that only exists because the exclusive OS on all phones blocks independent direct communcation on hardware-level and leaves no other option.
 
I'm not on any of them. Occasionally I see a reddit link in web search results but my hosts file blocks the site. Pretty much agree with maturin . I would like to still read usenet, but since aioe shut down a few years ago I can't find a good free nntp server.
