IRC: Which client do you use?

I'm using hexchat, which is unfortunately deprecated. And I'm connected through my ZNC bouncer.

For those using HexChat, are you concerned at all about potential security issues considering it's not being maintained? (and hasn't been for quite some time!) I'll admit, it is very easy to use.

I do not using but possible. I think irssi is very good and as scottro said wheechat too.

No. Don't run as root. Run if a jail if you feel the need.

Its not like I live there. I ask question and wait for reply. usually 5 minutes every 3 months. Usually in u-boot and gpsd groups.

To be fair, irssi isn't exactly being churned with fixes / updates either.

IRC and the clients are pretty mature by now. Some software is just kinda "complete".

Perhaps, however:

1. We will all be dead, long before IRCv3 matters
2. As per the spec, even ancient clients must remain supported

Realistically what this means is that In space-year 3099, Microsoft Comic Chat will still remain viable. That really is a win for mankind.

When I'm at the command line, I'll use either of the two IRC clients.

Irssi

While I'm on a GUI system, I'll reach for XCHAT which re-bended to hexchat.

I suspect the strip was drawn before 2018, when slack made it impossible to use with irssi. As mentioned above, for awhile, there was an irssi gateway that worked but it seems to have stopped working awhile ago. As kpedersen said, some software is kind of complete.

As someone or another has said, Good tools that still do a good job are valuable.
