A rant about bying online difference different countries.

I'm not sure there is any real sci-fi today. That was a time when people dared to dream. Not so much now.
Everyone's afraid of offending someone somewhere. The good stories and jokes are locked in a vault.
Like i tell my Indian Friend. Maybe Fire-Water.
And this is how I got into trouble with my son and his "woke" wife. I talked about how I got to see a tribal dance put on by one of the Indian tribes and how great it was. The offense was calling them "Indian" and that his wife is some small percentage whatever she calls that. It didn't matter that the Cherokee Nation had a website (now gone) called indiannation.com or somesuch. It didn't matter that before I met his mother I dated a full-blooded Indian for three years (forgot which tribe).

I mentioned this in another post somewhere. If you're not a member or partially a member of a race, I don't think you can judge them. I remember my wife, (full Japanese) being offended at a little ditty my nieces, who were probably around 8 and 10, chanted, something about Japanese, Chinese, dirty knees, or something else silly, that I didn't see how it was offensive. My wife mentioned later that it had bothered her. I didn't see how, but felt that she had a right. As my brother always intimidated me, I wound up speaking to my mother who spoke to at least the older niece, who called to apologize.

How you judge your daughter in law is up to you of course, but, in my arrogant opinion, if it bothered her, I feel it should be up to her. Even if she's some (to us) absurdly small percentage of native American. It hasn't been that long since various words were considered quite acceptable that, thankfully, no longer are.

My gosh that was it. But they didn't do the Look at these part, or if they did, it had other actions. They were pretty young, like I said, around 8 and 10, and I know that if they'd done the look at these part, with those actions, I would remember. Or maybe they stuck in another phrase like look at me or something, but that was it.

Espionage724 I don't know if I'm the only one who feels this way, but I appreciate you giving the length of the video in your post. I have a friend who will tell me look at this video, it turns out to be 15 minutes or something.

scottro It bothered her because she chose to let it bother her. That's why I mentioned the "woke" part. She examines every word out of people's mouths just looking for things to be offended by and not just the Indian thing.

I told my wife, after I first met her, that he seems to be happy so that's good but there's just something I can't put my finger on that's off and just a few years later I found out this is what it is.

Must have been interesting going around the factory. A guy I worked with had a corvette, he used to drive it into work each day, it looked like a fun motor! Similar stories here, british cars in the 70s were legendary for their poor build quality. It was the Japanese that taught the western auto companies about quality control. I have a little mazda that is my daily driver, its 11 years old now and it has not developed a single significant fault in that time, the only things that have needed changing are brake pads, it's still on the original factory fit silencer. It had a leak in the aircon radiator due to a stone puncture, I think that's the only thing I can point to... and that's most likely due to the poor state of the roads here, they are full of potholes.
I bought a five-year-old (December 1998) Suzuki Grand Vitara V6 (SQ625, E33) in 2004. I drove it until 2025 without any problems. Now I've given it to a relative who lives in the countryside and is quite happy with it. Not a single major breakdown (I've replaced the radiator, front suspension arms, the timing chain (once), and the low-pressure hose of the air conditioning system (twice) -- in 27 years, that's all!).

Yes it's become ridiculous here too. Maybe not as bad as that but there's all kinds of nonsense you're not supposed to say. I've noticed it's younger people who are the most uptight about it, which is strange, when I was young it was the other way around! Although perhaps that phase is past it's peak now (hopefully), although I'm not 100% convinced.

Yes some of them are very good. Not everything they make is great though... another friend had the mazda rotary engine sports car...the RX8, the more recent one. It had problems with oil leaks but the main problem was rust, he got a lot of rust in it. But most japanese stuff is good. I still have my casio F-91W watch and calculator :) . The western firms have caught up, to some extent at least. Someone else I know has a european ford focus, diesel engine, I'm not sure where it was made, perhaps germany... its 18 years old now, almost no rust, and about the only thing he's had gone on it was the battery. Although I had a little GM runabout years ago (GM is called 'Vauxhall' in the UK) that had endless small problems, usually sensors that had to be changed, and the cat convertor and silencer back-box failed regularly.

I don't know what the reliability of the current chinese EV's is like. But my friends/colleagues from china always used to say they wanted western cars, no self-respecting chinese person would buy a chinese car because of quality problems. They really liked german brands, especiallly Merc and BMW, and Mini was another favourite. Still, I don't know, maybe that has changed in recent years, I haven't spoken to anyone out there about cars for a while.

Ah, that reminds me... yes, I had to replace one of the front lower arms on the mazda a couple of years ago, the ball joint had gone, I forgot that. It's hardly surprising with the poor state of british roads, especially many of the small country roads that I drive around, much of the road system is in a terrible state here. It never used to be like that, I don't know what has happened to make it get so bad, I guess they just don't repair them like they used to. I've lost count of the number of times I've hit pot-holes... of course you always try to avoid them but can't help hitting them sometimes. Car suspensions take a hammering here.

It is indeed up to them, as sad as it is.

See, we have a God-given gift, that is our mind.
Now certainly everybody is free to do with their mind whatever they want - but still I would think it most useful to entertain oneself with valuable and rewarding things.
If people instead prefer to entertain themselves with searching for opportunities where they can possibly feel offended, then that is their decision and their own responsibility.

But beware: this is something entirely different to the US-government committing genocide with the Indian Removal Act, or the Nazis killing my Jewish anchestors - which indeed took away the freedom of these people.
I for my part do not take away the freedom of anybody who utterly wants to feel offended - but the other way round, those who enjoy to feel offended, they want to take away my freedom, they want to have me under their thumb, they want to put themselves over me and teach me their twisted morals like the roman church did before - so I reserve the freedom to not care.

Besides, feeling offended has a tradition among westerners. Not so long ago people felt
offended by so-called "witches" dsregarding the morals of the roman church, and that resulted in it being necessary to burn them alive.

People have the right to feel insulted. And because it's a choice to feel insulted you shouldn't bother other people with it.

The intolerance of other peoples words and views seems normal these days. Elon Musk is a nice example. He used to be the hero for making EV's. Then he started voting red instead of blue and the same people intensely hate him for it. It makes me wonder if these people are fit for a domocracy.

Thanks for mentioning, this is strange indeed.

Looking back at the students revolutions of 1968, and using freudian terms, that whole thing was mainly about getting rid of the repressive paternal super-ego and instead follow the natural desires of the id (like "all you need is love"), in order to live in harmony with nature instead of warring nature.

But very soon a new repressive super-ego was installed, this time driven by moral imperatives like anti-fascism, anti-sexism and anti-racism. These are actually marxist "side-orders", that is, they would result als consequences out of applying marxism. But those in power were not at all interested in applying marxism, only in creating a moralist leverage.
Consequentially, love was no longer desireable, and the new feminist stance became: love is hostile against women, unless they get properly paid for it.

So now we have the delicate situation that love is something to be ashamed of, while greed for money is not. What do you expect from a youth being raised under such circumstances, and in addition rigorously trained for AHDS by means of all kinds of gadgets?

What gets me is how fierce their reactions are, we never used to be like that, it was much more laid back and easy-going. I used to be more worried about how my homebrew was coming along than being "woke". But now it's screaming and shouting, uncontrollable anger... someone has done a good job of programming them, maybe in the education system, or perhaps the media, I don't know. It's so dogmatic and one-sided, with no balance. Of course, a lot of kids and young adults aren't like that, it's only some... strangely it often seems to be the ones from better-off backgrounds. What really does surprise me is that the universities seem to be full of it, there was really not much of this stuff when I was at univ; well, I guess it was there in the background, but it was much more low-key compared to now. Or perhaps that's not really a surprise. Oh well, hopefully its a fad that will pass in time, the pendulum will swing back the other way.

Perhaps underlying it is the very tough economic situation facing a lot of young people nowadays... a very tough job market, huge student debt hanging over them (we never had that), sky-high property prices. They don't go out protesting about unemployment or lack of jobs or house prices... but perhaps it comes out in other ways. Although... it was pretty tough when I was young, too. Anyhow, I'm just speculating.

Yeah, scottro is right, this isn't really the right place to discuss this kind of stuff, we're drifting o/t even inside this already o/t thread! It's supposed to be a technical forum... and I'm one of the worst offenders! 😂

I respectfully disagree. Your freedom is usually far less infringed than those offended. All the jokes about, say, women? They're the things that allow people in power to justify not promoting them. You mention the Nazis. I wonder if Jewish jokes were considered Ok, slightly before they came into power, and if Jews were offended, being told to get over it, they were being too sensitive. I don't know your location, but here in the US, with people in power saying Ohh, woke people are too sensitive, it is becoming an issue where people who are not white, male, and straight have to worry.

For example, during Covid, my wife, who as I said is Japanese, wound up wearing sunglasses all the time, as well as a mask, because people would yell epithets at her, seeing the Asian features. As a Jew, albeit, not very religious, I experienced prejudice, though not very bad, growing up in the 1960s. Again, my experience is in the US. But, taking your statement about witches, probably those who defended the absurdity of it were called woke. And the vast majority were female, the partial result of the American misogyny.

That being said, I'm going to drop out of this thread, as I don't think this forum is the place for it. We come here for FreeBSD discussion. drhowarddrfine, though we disagree on this, I hope you realize that it isn't an attack on you, it's a respectful disagreement with your point of view here.
