Solved bhyve networking requires tap interface no matter what?

On Linux I was able to set up networking for a qemu guest without setting up any tap interfaces, I believe. The guest was just allowed to use the network interface, I guess sending packets from its own IP. (MacVTap?)

On FreeBSD I have none of that and must use tap interface and a bridge for any networking for the bhyve guest?

Dear loveydovey, I think it's more productive to not compare A with B if you are using A and, instead, just ask how to do C with A.

Also it could be worth checking out Netgraph. A different paradigm, very performant.

At one time, a process inside a jail could listen to localhost. The open port then appeared on the host's interface. I don't know if that is true today.

You don't need a bridge if you don't want it.

You can just NAT the tap interface with ipfw. But if you don't use a bridge you have to do it every time after the VM starts.

I use pf...they say nothing more beautiful than pf, but apparently it is a bit slower than ipfw in some scenarios?
