So now RAM will also have firmware blobs [ARGH!]

Soon: RAM-as-a-service, with intelligent AI-enabled content customization. Your bits will never look the same again(tm). Only $99.95/month. Terms and conditions apply, certain squares and data should not be stored and retrieved.

Certainly another vulnerability. I imagine a firmware update would have to be downloaded to another bank of memory or flash drive. Would be nuts to directly flash the RAM from the internet so likely the firmware is incorporated into the BIOS and from there, flashed to RAM. A power disruption during boot could bork many $$$ of RAM.

We also saw this play out with USB3.x flash drives. dd'ing an install image wiped out the firmware rendering the drive unmountable.

Like, for five seconds, these products exist and nobody can confirm in like a driver or something if they actually have firmware?

I remember when it took two of us to roll 64k across the raised floor at Bank of America.

I also remember having to replace a bit on a Core Storage board on an IBM 3895 check sorter. I was youngest and had the best eyesight.

Core memory was gone when I started to push bits around. My first contact was hangman on a zx80, memories lost in the fog of the past...

It would be funny if the entire reason for them buying up all the compute hardware(even that they aren't using and can't use) was that someone had hit actual general intelligence AI.

The interested parties wanting to limit access to only the chosen few would track with current events and news for RAM, GPUs and other hardware.

Hmm... almost tempted to write a short sifi story based on this lol.

That's a complete nightmare for secure computing.
Agreed. What is "secure computing" today? Is it when your entire medical record containing your personal data is stored somewhere in the cloud? Is it when CCTV cameras with facial recognition recognize you on the street? Is "blockchain" technology secure computing? Forgive my ignorance, but I don't quite understand why we're so worried? A processor in memory – to speed up the processing of AI garbage? Or to create a data array to make you easier to identify? DO THEY NEED THAT? THEY are a state repressive apparatus. Like in China, for example. Yesterday they reported that somewhere in Asia you can no longer buy a regular SIM card without a biometric facial scan. F*ck your SIM cards.
DDR3 is enough for me today. Maybe this memory won't be so much desktop memory as "cloud" memory – for servers in the cloud or for crypto exchanges? Why do I need this memory? I'll have enough DDR3 for another five years.
Maybe it's time to change my personal paradigm in the context of "secure computing" and total consumption? Why do Americans consume so many resources? Why do you need so much memory, broadband, and powerful computing processes that only heat up the air? Many are stuck in this. For example, I, a primitive user, don't fucking need to know how many seconds it takes my FreeBSD to load—60 or 120? I don't fucking need to know how quickly a website loads in my browser. I can wait an extra 10 seconds...
I'm not going to buy some special memory for those 10 seconds.
just put an extra processor on the RAM module.
What if I don't insert any processor into this socket?
