Firefox installed from packages on my RaspBerry Pi Zero crashes every time I launch it...

an ampere based vm (CAX41)
16 cores
32 GB ram
320 GB storage
20 TB bw
is € 24.49 / mo at hetzner
word on the street is that you can boot in recovery console and dd a (slightly modified / with root ssh keys)freebsd image over the provided one

I would like to rent that ampere based vm for 1 month. Its enough to try to compile and fix the errors given by chromium and to make the dd image of FreeBSD. Maybe I will also try to install the panfrost driver, installing FreeBSD 14.1. But i don't see the option to choose the solution suggested by you.

the vm is useful only for chromium. kernel can be cross built on any x86 box without installing any additional tools

ok. Point me to the option at the Hezner website to rent the vm that you said. I don't see it. Prices the various options available are higher.

I'm reading that maybe I can enable KVM on Linux installed on the Rock chip. Is this good ?

the idea is to virtualize FreeBSD on a qemu+kvm Ubuntu virtual machine created on the Rockchip RK3399.
Last I heard qemu+kvm gave a good speed boost compared to non-kvm. We used to have such nice things here but I think FreeBSD lost that around qemu6 or so when Linux developers who had taken over maintaining qemu deemed its current accelerator too hard to maintain. I didn't try to use it as an architecture emulator so not sure if that was doable then but non-emulated should be faster than emulated (assuming hardware is otherwise equal). Qemu is slower and adds more overhead so I don't think you will ever run FreeBSD under Qemu faster than running it on the same hardware directly.

You can probably use yt-dlp or similar with a stand alone media player like VLC to get better performance than trying to view it in a browser but I only have x86/x64 experience. VLC can even play youtube videos with just the link alone last I tried but controls like rewind weren't well handled. Maybe other browsers that aren't using blink (chromium) gecko (firefox) can do it too. Many browsers make use of those same engines (firefox forks, qt*-webengine consumers are chromium forks, etc.) but there may be some worth trying.

If compiling it yourself, it may be worth trying to set compiler and linker flags for a less optimized build which can noticeably speed up the compiler and may help 'some' with its memory consumption during building. You could get reduced RAM and CPU overhead by using an older or more basic compiler. Some older compilers may be incompatible due to incomplete/buggy implementation of standards if you go back too far and changing 'any' build steps opens up the possibility of showing otherwise unseen bugs (I've ran into a program that was broken with -O0 that worked with any optimization above it).

For qemu without the kvm acceleration, yes. But I think that compiling chromium using a qemu + kvm Linux based vm will be faster than doing it natively on FreeBSD without any acceleration.

I saw that the chromium developers added the panfrost driver as new option if you compile it from ports. This is the reason why I'm trying to compile it. Probably chromium + the panfrost driver is the best choice available at the moment.

They ask a card ID to become a registered member who can use their virtual servers. Today I tried to identify myself using my card ID using the Kinect 2 as a webcam (the only tool I can use : their system does not work on my phone),but I haven't been recognized as a valid member. After some tries,I gave up. I sent an email to them, explaining that I have some troubles with their automatic recognition system, but no one replied.

chrome build finished

This is what happens when I run chrome after having installed your chromium package :

that looks like a file system error not a chrome problem

I'm not sure. Anyway,I've installed and I'm running lxde instead of xfce4 and I've enabled dbus on rc.conf and now the errors when I run chromium changed :

Trace/BPT trap

LXDE didn't crash. It seems that dbus is required. Errors related to it have disappeared. Anyway,Chromium does not yet start, claiming errors related to the GPU.

cracauer@ : Everytime it crashes (I suppose because I try to launch Firefox or Chromium),it does it so deep that even the file system got corrupted. So I should detach the sd card and do a fsck -y :

Code:
mount: /dev/da0p4: R/W mount on /mnt/da0p4 denied. Filesystem is not clean - run fsck.: Operation not permitted
marietto# fsck -y /dev/da0p4
** /dev/da0p4
** Last Mounted on /
** Phase 1 - Check Blocks and Sizes

when the error has been corrected,it will restart working...until the next crash. I think that on the Radxa 3W I can't run any browser without asking to don't use the GPU.

dpms: X Display Power Management Signaling
have you tried disabling any power management services or installing a dpms extension?

have you tried disabling gpu acceleration in Chromium?
$ chromium --disable-gpu
$ chromium --disable-gpu --disable-software-rasterizer

I've just installed the covacat Chromium package on the RockPro RK3399 (on FreeBSD 14.3-BETA4) and is working nicely (without --disable-gpu and or --disable-software-rasterizer). The same package installed on the Radxa zero 3W board (without --disable-gpu and or --disable-software-rasterizer) crashes everything. What this means ?

I have also installed the tor-browser based on Mozilla Firefox 128.9.0esr on the RockPro RK3399 and on FreeBSD 14.3-BETA4 and it works great. The latest version of Firefox crashes.

Hi ZioMario,

My apologies for my obviously uneductaed previous post: I should've read the entire thread.

Am i seeing this correctly: 512 MB ram? we are just hamster-wheeling around the elephant in the room. You need a lightweight user-agent to operate on 512Mb ram. Seriously. And by lightweight, i mean like Netscape 4 or Firefox 10. Something that will run on Windows XP/2000/98SE (which often had only 512Mb ram). I use K-Meleon on Windows 10 from time-to-time but i do not know if a FreeBSD port exists or not. K-Meleon has security issues that must be known but it should work with 512MB ram. Otherwise, Links or Lynx is your best bet.

Best wishes,
John

Hello John.

The RockPro Rk3399 has 4 Gb of RAM and the Radxa Zero 3W board that I have bought has the same amount of memory. Where did u read "512 MB" of ram ? Yes,I have also used the Raspberry Pi Zero 2W with 512 Mb of ram,but I don't use it anymore because its not enough powerful.
