No internet post install

I've just setup 14 on my laptop.

I'm getting no internet connection.

/etc/resolv.conf has :
nameserver 192.168.8.1

(only)

I can't find an entry for dhcp in /etc/rc.conf

I know this is probably obvious to more experienced hands and greater minds, but could anyone give me some pointers?

EDIT - I'm also not confident in my setup here. I may have skipped the ethernet connection assuming wired as the laptop is only ever on wifi. Clumsy, I know.

thanks!

from pciconf I see the Intel Centurion Wireless-N 100 in the network section.
and the RTL8111 under network, ethernet.

there does seem to be a large amount of poking around in conf files, without actually getting access to wifi.

Not really. The only file that's important is /etc/rc.conf and for wireless you'll also need to set up /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf.

Start here, it'll explain how to configure networking (wired and/or wireless):

I had set up the supplicant file already. I've got entries (I think) in rc.conf and boot loader for the module. I've been following Chapter 7 but still a bit stuck. I've tried to attach a couple of photos I'd taken of the files (converted to PNG) but not sure what the size limit Is here.

Ok, at what point are you stuck? What did you put in /etc/rc.conf? After the system booted, does ifconfig wlan0 output anything? Look closely at the output, is there an IP address? What does the status: line tell you?

After the 3rd step of the guide, with my network entry in the wpa_supplicant.conf and the sysrc entries, netstart wasn't getting a connection to the network.

executing the command in first step in 7.4.2 returned a bad command error.

entries in rc.conf, that I think pertain to the network setup are
wlans_iwn0="wlan0"
Ifconfig_wlan0="WPA DHCP"

I've commented out a line for ipv6 as I don't use it (knowingly.)

(A lot of what I'm doing would also be easier if the KDE desktop setup respected my having set the UK keymap already, but that's a different gripe)

for the ifconfig wlan0 output, the same as I've been getting which really doesn't seem right as I've got the correct wpa entry.
status: no carrier

One thing you could try if all the configuration is correct and if the system has a valid IP address (ifconfig wlan0)
but no connection to the network try as root:

`service dhclient restart wlan0

Not sure if you are wanting to sort wireless or ethernet....

What does
ifconfig
tell you?

As for WiFi, I'd first suggest doing a scan using wlan0 to see if your SSID shows up.

currently, wireless only. Never use a wired connection.

My SSID does show up, Vodafone, which is added to my wpa_supplicant file.

I really appreciate everyone taking the time to suggest, thanks!

Can you show the output of
ifconfig

How are you scanning wifi networks?
Currently, I think I'd have to copy that to a USB as text to upload via this computer. I'll have a look. Was hoping to post the rc.conf and bootloader pics I'd taken but that's too large apparently, even as png

redirected ifconfig to a text file and copied with trusty old USB. Where would we be without removable storage?
