Just in case you cannot install Anydesk on FreeBSD 14

Hello. Today, minutes before this writing, Anydesk is not found on the official website nor it is found in the ports tree.

The fix is to execute the command as user root :
pkg install gtkglext
Then download Anydesk from this link:
Then move the downloaded file to as root :
/usr/ports/distfiles/
Then as user root run:
cd /usr/ports/deskutils/anydesk/ && make install clean
And we are done.

it's also questionable to use a remote access software that has not seen an update since April 2021 (it landed 8 months later in FreeBSD ports). At least the Linux variant is more recent (from 10.08.2023), but your safest bet is using it in a Windows VM.

That's why I'm running Bhyve for (I'm NOT confident in Anydesk and for security reasons I can't run a RustDesker server) ; not tested yet for my "real world" customer helpdesk yet but I'm somewhat concerned by unavailable graphics acceleration as I need to be fast on remote computers.
But yes, I'll do this way to run Anydesk, I won't add this to FreeBSD.

The only "remote control" access I need to any FreeBSD (or Linux, I don't judge) system would be ssh(1).

we've been using anydesk for remote support on our windows boxes for several years, so I also use anydesk from my FreeBSD desktop and laptop to connect to those things (never the other way around though - why would I want a sluggish GUI connection when everything is done *much* faster and more efficient via ssh?)

Their underlying protocol/crypto/etc hasn't changed in years - simply because it is rather simple and well designed; so why change it? they just occasionally update/change some of the bells&whistles of the GUI and constantly work around new breakage from windows - that's why the windows version is moving *really* fast in version numbers. Also versions <8 keep crashing when closing a session to a windows 10+ client, because they won't close the connection gracefully and the "initiator"-side crash has only been fully mitigated in versions 8+

I would not put all my business on Anydesk, as it is a commercial money targeted software, and that's why I try to go to Rustdesk (self hosted open source alternative).
The day Anydesk will change its policy on free uses and/or privacy concerns, I'm ready ?
Don't forget they also recently got hacking outage.

But hell no, I won't SSH my Windows customers ?

I did not advise anyone to install AnyDesk. All I did is describing the installation method. You all misunderstood me. I later even tried the version I talked about and found that it was not working. I was able to get an ID number, but I was not able to communicate with anyone.

BTW, the security you are talking about is meaningless and worthless for someone like me living in a war zone. And if you have something, don't publish it online -even though you put its setting as private- unless you mean to, because we already know private stuff is actually and in reality public :)

Don't worry, for my concern I wasn't reading your thread like an advise to use anydesk :)
When I use Anydesk, that's for low-end helping customers without any concern about security, so I don't care, but I disagree sko statement (that's my own opinion, no offense to anyone :) !) regarding intense use of Anydesk, that's very fast, easy to use and some options are nice, but I'm somewhat mind-distorded and I can't be confident on a setup built on top of a freemium software which can easily change the game rules.
Thank you for your method :)

none taken.
back when we needed some remote support tool there weren't much viable free/open solutons available that I could have considered "production ready" and especially one that offered a client for FreeBSD (because I'm the one who has to connect to those windows boxes most of the time).
If I had/could choose today I'd also go with some on-premise solution, but I've got enough other tasks on my list for now and for the (very) few occasions we actually need it (i.e. only for internal support) it's good enough for now...

I do agree. Anydesk is easy/safe to use, where Rutsdesk is interesting in internal usage (kind of "easier" VNC) ; I've setup a Rustdesk server (it's very easy) for a customer but it's for their own usage (so they have the same server version against client versions, yippie no problems), and I start using it as a "universal" gateway for random customers, pretty difficult.
First, the official path is very boring. I have to point the customer to Github, click here, click there... Where some of my customers can even browse to a Google page. I have shortcuts from my website, but I have to keep them updated all the time.
Next, the client version must be the same as the public servers ; if not, connection will fail. Anydesk is very safe, as you said we can use old versions (both customers or me) and it will work.
To make things to work fine on Rustdesk, I'd have to run my own server (I don't want to) or hard code something to self-update Rustdesk on customers computers... That's why I eventually use Anydesk but I'm prepared "in case of" ; Teamviewer already tried to force me to buy a licence, I ran away :p
And Aammyy admin is dead, LogMeIn is much too invasive, and Microsoft Get Help... i don't want Microsoft :D

I was able to install anydesk using the file from anydesk site and the ports, but it was not working until I found your post and did :
pkg install gtkglext

Thank you for the help!

I am curious, how did you figured out that gtkglext needed to be installed ?

Regards,

Do you see the following error on installing anydesk?

No UTF-8. Trying to change locale.
Locale sucessfully changed.

Edit: it's not even an error, just something that prevents me from actually running Anydesk.
