I'm very pleased with FreeBSD 14, to which I recently upgraded. Almost everything runs smoothly, and what doesn't was rectified with a few tweaks here and there. However, as ever, I was a bit dismayed that some packages of programs that I use or play regularly (specifically, sweep, asedit, lbreakout, lbreakout2, xvt, gimmage, aqualung) that are without apparent defect are on the chopping block because they're abandoned, old, or both.
asedit and the lbreakout clones are undeniably old and long abandoned, but so too have been many other programs presently in the repos that I've used for years. Are they targeted because they're very unpopular or superannuated?
Moreover, gimmage and aqualung are deprecated for their reliance on GTK2, et cetera, but many other programs that I use rely on these libraries.
xvt (actually rxvt if memory serves) was an especial surprise, as I know it to be popular; urxvt is certainly an adequate, if not superior replacement, but I only wonder why. Is its retention simply unworthy of the trouble that it would or might entail?
This post is inquisitive, not critical. I have tremendous regard for maintainers. Whenever necessary, I don't at all object to the prospect of compiling some or all of these programs in the future from source if feasible. Nathless, I am curious about the specific criteria by which packages of unbroken programs are deprecated. Is it codified in a document, or are these packages treated in address of individual circumstances? This is something I've wondered since a game that I enjoy (xevil) was purged from the repos and I was forced to compile it from source.
Conversely, I was almost shocked that so many programs requiring python27 are still only deprecated! XD
Thanks in advance for any helpful replies!
