There was the ability to capture video directly from kdenlive.
It was removed upstream when they switched from kde4 to Plasma.
I went back through the old versions of Ubuntu Studio to test it out.

I have firewire_load="YES" in /boot/loader.conf. I could simply need a new firewire adapter. I've tried my current one on a version of Linux and the camera isn't recognized on that system either. I suspent the adapter has simply gone bad. Some things I read in post made me wonder if it is still supported but it's good to hear that it is still supported. I have already ordered a new adapter. There was the ability to capture video directly from kdenlive.
