It really depends. My perception is that there are 2 kinds of students, those having chosen IT randomly because they HAD to go to university but had no idea of what they wanted to do in life, and those having caught the IT virus and feeling happy to be able to study what they like, at last. The latter make very good IT professionals, sometimes even better than others doing that job for a long time just to bring the bacon home.
Concerning the former, note it is not always because they don't care, but very often because they feel so much pressure on their shoulders that they are afraid to make any decision.

I find most young people who want to learn programming and computer usage are always looking for an easier way to get around having to do that. Those are the people who want to not learn C, math, science and are always on reddit or Stack Overflow looking for a framework or library that will do the work for them rather than understanding how things work.
