Using my phone for audio

The audio output from my ThinkPad W520 is really quiet on max volume but the audio from my phone from my phone is really loud. Can I use my phone to listen audio files on my computer?

Apologies if this is a really dumb question.

Short answer: nope, not really.

Longer answer: maybe, but you'll need to experiment. You could try installing termux on the phone, and then install sshfs on termux, if it's available. Then you need sshd running on the W520, and mount the laptop directory containing the music files remotely inside termux on the phone using sshfs. Then use something like mplayer or mpv to play them on the phone from the remotely mounted laptop directory.

But an easier way is to get some bluetooth mini-speakers to use with the laptop. Or some headphones. Beyerdynamic DT990's are good and not too expensive.

My termux's pkg cannot find sshfs, although my phone is not rooted.
AFAIK multimedia/vlc has an embedded broadcasting functionality.
According to GROK:

Code:
Yes, VLC includes built-in streaming / broadcasting features. What VLC can do:
Stream video/audio files, playlists, or live capture devices (webcam, screen, etc.)
Act as a simple media server over your local network (or with port forwarding, over the internet)
Support multiple protocols: HTTP, UDP, RTP, RTSP, and more
Use the VideoLAN Manager (VLM) for more advanced multi-stream broadcasting and scheduling
Quick way to start streaming (GUI):
Open VLC
Go to Media → Stream (or press Ctrl + S)
Add the file (or capture device) you want to broadcast
Click Stream
Choose a destination (most people use HTTP)
Set a port (default is often 8080)
Optionally enable transcoding
Click Stream

A simple method would be if the phone supports working as an speaker as Bluetooth, then you could setup the phone as bluetooth activated and using the FreeBSD bluetooth commands setup the pairing to hear with the phone as an speaker.
Other way would be a long list of getting some remote speaker app for the phone, getting some virtual spekaer software for the phone, then connecting them in some manner, just a hellish project.
A slightly simpler idea is making the virtual speaker to transmit an multimedia broadcast and using e.g. VLC in the phone to listen to the broadcast.

Can't I set up the computer to output via bluetooth to my phone?
That's interesting, because my car can do that. I can link the phone to the car's infotainment system with bluetooth, and it will play the music that is on the phone using the car audio system. I don't know how it's implemented, but it's clearly possible. Perhaps there's some file sharing facility in the bluetooth protocol itself.

Briefly revisiting the termux/sshfs idea... I found someone has written an sshfs for termux here https://github.com/neiviv-ui/termux-sshfs
Unfortunately he says your phone had to be rooted to install it, so it's not as simple as a package you can just install, which is what I was hoping might be available.
I guess if you feel like doing some hacking you could download the sshfs source and try compiling it on the phone with gcc, termux does have gcc available. I've tried compiling code on my phone before, it's like going back to compiling on a pentium 2 or thereabouts, very slow.

It sounds like the kodi suggestion might be the best one to try so far. Or try Napoleon's unicast project.

I got this small pair of bt speakers, and got them to work with freebsd 14.4 on the thinkpad. In the photo I've put them on the wrist-rest at the front. Huge upgrade on the thinkpads built-in speakers, and true stereo, nice sound quality, plenty loud enough.

Not as interesting as piping sound to the phone over bt though. :-)

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Bluetooth_protocols
Bluetooth has AVDTP which sounds like something you might be able to use between the pc and the phone over bt.

"Audio/video data transport protocol (AVDTP)

Used by the advanced audio distribution profile to stream music to stereo headsets over an L2CAP channel. Intended to be used by video distribution profile."

There's a detailed description of the specs here https://web.archive.org/web/2010022...hnology/Works/Data_Transport_Architecture.htm

Of course you want to use something like kodi or napoleon's project so you don't have to learn how all that stuff works...

This sounds like it's worth a try. Maybe you don't need to use any extra software, just configure bluetooth to do the job.
