Since snappymail is no longer supported - alternatives?

Can you be a little more specific? I never heard of this port, and as such I can't suggest anything based on the port; but if you would tell us what functionality you're looking for... that would help.

Since snappymail is no longer supported
Port not having a maintainer doesn't mean it's not supported any more. It only means there's nobody looking after it and it's left up to the community.

mail/snappymail

It's up to date with upstream, at the moment it's only missing an update that was released less than an hour ago.

Version of the port: https://github.com/the-djmaze/snappymail/releases/tag/v2.38.2
That new version only seems relevant to their docker containers; https://github.com/the-djmaze/snappymail/releases/tag/v2.38.2.1

It seems there are some health issues.

It is beginning to look that way.

RoundCube

RoundCube is still actively maintained, but I wouldn't call it 'lightweight'.

TBH, as long as it builds/runs fine with current PHP versions, I'd stick with squirrelmail. It's working, feature-complete and talks plain imap and smtp with the server which isn't changing, so it will just keep working. Its code is so minimal, that possibly all bugs have been found and fixed by now, so a lack of updates wouldn't concern me.
Communication with the mailserver is done via php modules which handle TLS, and the web part is handled by a webserver which also handles everything TLS-related; So everything security/encryption-related is kept up to date.
