No sound of laptop inner microphone

you can look at dmesg to determine if your mic is picking up on your device. Another step is to run cat /dev/sndstat to confirm what audio devices you have avialable.
 
I have a similar issue, I discovered that when I run audacity I can select different input options and that selection seems to get the internal mike selected/working for zoom as well. Very kludgey, but it works. I tried to figure out how to solve it using device.hints but failed.

This is on a thinkpad w520 though.
