Solved No sound from USB headset but it IS recognized by system

So your pulseaudio is not having any of the /dev/dsp devices open? You had it running during the fuser, did you?

Let's try it the other way round:

Code:
procstat -f <pid_of_pulseaudio>

Let's try this:

root@freebsd:/home/ed # procstat -a | grep pulse
91794 71235 91791 91791 0 2 ed select FreeBSD ELF64 pulseaudio
root@freebsd:/home/ed #

Well, pulseaudio is running but has none of the /dev/dsp* devices open. Typical.

The question now is why it works for (some) other people.

Meanwhile you can see whether the stack with jackd works for you.

Forgive me, can I just run your commands from a command prompt or do I need to make a script out of it?

jackd -r -d oss -r 48000 -C /dev/dsp3 -P /dev/dsp3 &
sleep 3
killall pulseaudio
sleep 0.53
pulseaudio -v -L module-jack-sink -L module-jack-source &

You can disregard my prior reply. I made a script out of it, and here's the response:

errno 13 is permission denied.

Why did beep work, then? Did you run it as root?

What is `ls -l /dev/dsp3`?
Yes, I ran beep as root. Here's just running as me:

$ beep
beep: Failed to open '/dev/dsp': Permission denied

$ ls -l /dev/dsp3
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 0x7c Oct 23 14:31 /dev/dsp3

Is your user in the audio group?
elgrande You LITERALLY beat me to the reply!

It was as simple as:

# pw group mod audio -m ed

and SHAZAM ...I have sound from my headset and my microphone works!!!

I will, just for grins and to confirm everything works as I would expect, I will re-install the OS from scratch, follow my notes and if all goes well, I will mark this case as SOLVED.

Thank you cracauer@ blackbird9 tyoc213 and anyone else I may be overlooking!

I'll keep you posted...have a great weekend!

Oh..I didn't think I was, but apparently I am! Shame on me!

FreeBSD freebsd 16.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 16.0-CURRENT main-n290304-775e421dc38f GENERIC amd64

Right. That audio group requirement is new in 16.

Always check /usr/src/UPDATING when updating (knowingly) to -current. It has all these nuggets.
