ZFS Creating ZFS datasets for snapshots?

Hi,

Never really understood ZFS datasets. I currently have this:

Code:
# zfs list
NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT
zroot 8.46G 27.9G 88K /zroot
zroot/ROOT 7.07G 27.9G 88K none
zroot/ROOT/default 7.07G 27.9G 7.07G /
zroot/backup 88K 27.9G 88K /zroot/backup
zroot/tmp 128K 27.9G 128K /tmp
zroot/usr 1.28G 27.9G 88K /usr
zroot/usr/home 1.28G 27.9G 1.10G /usr/home
zroot/usr/ports 88K 27.9G 88K /usr/ports
zroot/usr/src 88K 27.9G 88K /usr/src
zroot/var 94.0M 27.9G 88K /var
zroot/var/audit 88K 27.9G 88K /var/audit
zroot/var/crash 88K 27.9G 88K /var/crash
zroot/var/log 93.4M 27.9G 93.4M /var/log
zroot/var/mail 236K 27.9G 236K /var/mail
zroot/var/tmp 88K 27.9G 88K /var/tmp

I have been taking daily snapshots of zroot/ROOT/default, but I would like to narrow this down to /etc and /usr/local/etc. I understand I can't do that, as those aren't datasets.

My question is simply; can I just zfs create zroot/etc, and start snapshooting, or do I need to know or do anything?

It's that simple.

Just be caseful while /etc is moved away for the copying. Better boot from a memory stick while you are doing that.

And make sure the BE knows to also cover those new datasets.

Hm, what's going to happen, exactly? It's only a few MB, so it should be quick, but...

How do I verify BE coverage?

How is init(8) going to find /etc/rc if /etc isn't mounted yet? At boot only zroot/ROOT/default will be available.
