dd can only backup your drive 1:1, so also the empty space is backupped, which, as you already see yourself, is pretty bogus, especially when the drive is pretty empty. gzip like all other packers work on files, not drives or partitions...

And I'm guessing kldload snd_uaudio doesn't help? The problem here is that the device reports as bInterfaceClass = 0x00ff &lt;Vendor specific&gt; instead of the correct class for usb audio. you will need a patch for snd_uaudio.
