Localization is a non trivial topic - better ask for a specific language.
In general:
At first you have to set your locale variables to a certain language (There are several things languages differ in: the way time...
No, the freebsd-boot partition is 311 blocks large. The size in gpart output is the number of blocks, with one block being 512 bytes. The pmbr/mbr is 512 bytes (actually the code itself is 446 bytes, that 512 byte first block also contains the...
Looks like the problem must have arisen when I tried to set up a local repository.
After removing /usr/local/etc/pkg/ things work normally.
With 15.0 due out next month, I'll postpone upgrading.
Or, to put it more precisely: "How do I set up my computer's console / Xorg to <lang>.
balanga, see handbook Chapter 25. Localization - i18n/L10n Usage and Setup
Correct, it's from my local ports tree.
I proposed the change to multimedia@, never got any feedback.
I'll check why the patch fails, probably the port got some changes since the email.

Reporting back:
- I installed freebsd 15.0-BETA4 shortly after it was released
- iwl0wifi device works now, no crashes, it actually works really well!
I'm getting > 360 mbps upload and >400 mbps download, which is even more than my phone.

The FreeBSD installer is executing upon system boot /etc/rc.local, this script executes /usr/libexec/bsdinstall/startbsdinstall, there the TERM export is happening:
kbdcontrol -d >/dev/null 2>&1
if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
# Syscons: use xterm...
14.1 is End-of-Life and unsupported. All 14 branch packages are now built on the FreeBSD package build clusters for version 14.3 (RELEASE and STABLE).
Which FreeBSD version branch of the packages should be installed is determined by the ABI...
Solaris used its own partition table format, handled by the Solaris format(8) command. The format is similar to but also incompatible to bsdlabel. The OBP understood the format.
I have sometimes had the experience of looking at very complicated (and well documented) code that I wrote several years ago, and thinking "Wow, I used to be a lot smarter back then." (Usually it's just that I was much more engaged in that...
I only know about adding Japanese. In that case, I use certain programs that enable me to input Japanese characters. This thread from a couple of years ago might give tips. https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/polish-localization-issues.88118/ I...
Sorry for the Linux excursion. It was Rust triggered and I went WTF on the social aspect of that message.
To get back on the Rust topic, I wonder how the different Rust toolchains for kernel and apt will be managed.
(About using partitions)
There are multiple reasons. One was already mentioned: Other parties (like the BIOS, or other operating systems) may see a disk without any partitions, assume that it is a blank disk, and put a partition table on it as a...
When trying to install any packages I get the above error, I can't figure what is wrong. The system (14.1) was working
previously but hasn't been used for some months.
I can ping pkg,FreeBSD.org so the error must be in my pkg configuration.
How...
Indeed. Just like they did with the "White House", the Rust lobbying committee are quite smart; they target the right people to confuse. Usually these are non-technical people who hold sway but have limited technical understanding.
When it comes...
Thank you all for sharing your opinions.
I’d be interested to hear more about it!
Personally, I think that beyond brainwashing, everyone is trying to create a kind of "dependency" on their technical decisions - selling training courses, books...
I also came into the state where i can speed run Arch install without any manual in just a few minutes. Im not proud.
In your Arch manual you are missing instructions on how to install Grub on systems running legacy BIOS.
I imagine you both know this but you can edit /etc/portage/make.conf and put in a thing prefer binary. If you do, run getuto first, as that will get the keys for said packages. As for Arch and Gentoo, a friend who used to really like Arch and...
That was the cool thing about the 68K processor. Lots of registers. And that reminded me of a meeting I had with a programmer at work years ago.
I was developing the hardware--a standalone computer with a real time operating system--and my good...
Well, I just tried archinstaller, and I prefer manual. Mostly because with the installer, I found it difficult to select extra packages I wanted, it took a long time to navigate up and down, so in the end, I gave up, just did a pretty minimal...

What I meant that on Linux system there is just one flat repository for everything. FreeBSD with PKGBASE still have pkg sets and vital packages and a different repository for Base System. If FreeBSD would be the same as Linux - all of the...

I've not used the Arch installer. I feel like I should try it though the manual install takes me less than 10-15 minutes, probably what an Ubuntu GUI install takes.
As for Gentoo, that takes me about 20 some minutes, using binary packages. May...
They provide binary packages for everything nowadays, unless you change any flag (which you usually do). But for those who are into bad software, the precompiled LibreOffice surely helps, I guess.
yeah i really like that it's quite conservative compared to Arch, i'm pretty sure the precompiled ones they ship is because the originals would take forever to compile on average hardware
it is probably not related to the OP's drive failures, but we've heard of people's BIOSes stomping on disks with no partition table accidentally. arguably buggy bios, but really, just best to have the structure there. plus, yes, some SSDs make...
my quick investigation tells me that it needs lib3mf which we don't have a port for
but the github lib3mf will build as long as you clone the dependencies too
I've spent most of my life on Debian Linux.
Updating to the chosen version is incredibly simple.
A small change to the repository configuration entries, executing two commands:
apt update && apt dist-upgrade
And if there are no conflicts, the...
