I've been having a hell of a time trying to get X and OpenBox to work properly on this system, so I have come here for assistance. I have experience setting up FreeBSD desktops, but not since the change to Xorg 1.14 that just came around. Most of my other desktops are still using the older Xorg servers with hald, but I relished this moment after I got this laptop that I didn't need hald, or dbus for a minimal desktop.

I am running FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE on this laptop.

After getting the system set up as I desired from the vt console, I proceeded to install x11-servers/xorg-server, x11/xinit, and x11-wm/openbox from pkgng.

As root, I ran # X -configure and copied the successful config file to the X11 directory.

After dropping back to my regular user, I set up the .xinitrc with the following:

So I ran startx and unceremoniously was greeted with a black background, an xterm window and a nonmovable cursor. Waited for a few minutes, no change. I switched back to the vt, and killed X. I looked at the /usr/ports/UPDATING and added the following to /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/input.conf:

No difference once I restarted X and retested.

I have tried this with the daemon moused running and not running - no change

Do you have anything unusual in /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Errors or warnings?
 
One other thing to try is remove or at least rename your xorg.conf and input.conf files and let Xorg configure itself on startup. Xorg usually does the right thing on its own and there seems to be an increasing number of problems with X -configure generated xorg.conf files as of late even when the file is created successfully.

I use NVIDIA graphics only.

I would use integrated INTEL graphics card but it does not support external displays (all external display ports are wired to NVIDIA card) and I use external display on daily basis so ...

From what I know OPTIMUS does not work on FreeBSD, but it does work on Linux with Bumblebee - http://bumblebee-project.org/
