XFCE, Change icons and themes.

Hi, I have a silly question about changing icons and themes under XFCE. On one of my desktop, I have XFCE and I want to know the best method. I know that there are two folders, where I can put new icons and themes: /usr/local/share/icons and /usr/local/share/themes. Is that places where I must unpack icons or themes archives? Or I should create in user home folder, two hiden folders: .icons and .themes, and do it here?
I am asking You because, I recently installed FreeBSD 8.1 on one of my computer and I want to explore XFCE.
Of course I can install themes from ports, but that is not the point.

Ok, I solved this "problem" by creating hidden folders and unpack there gzipped themes.
