Well, I can compile each of the Xfce packages. If I do this outside of the ports, I'll end up with a natural mess, which I don't want.Trying out a development branch without any idea how to compile it, much less how to fix bugs in it, doesn't sound like a very good idea.
The XFCE port is actually quite extensive, but XFCE itself is pretty easy to port and update.
Install a poudriere, create a local dev branch and try things out until you can compile it, if you can do that, you can try it out and learn enough to fix any issues you might encounter. Otherwise, it's best not to try it.
