X61 with Middleton BIOS

It looks like there are numerous people here who are owners of ThinkPad X61s.

Has anyone installed Middleton's Bios ?

Did you install it successfully and did it make much difference?

I'm hoping to install it shortly and would like to create some performance before and after installing it to see what sort of difference it makes.

What sort of things should I check?

I've done it and it works great. I don't have the machine any more... however, from memory, you get double the sata drive throughput, and you can put twice as much RAM in. And it removes a wifi adapter whitelist, although I didn't make use of that. It's good, it works. I seem to remember you have to upgrade to the final bios from lenovo before putting it on, but they give you full instructions. From memory, I got it from thikwiki. It's a worthwhile upgrade. It was a few years ago now, but I think I burned it onto a dvd and used a usb dvd drive to install it. I did a couple of T61's too, which is basically the same as X61 in a different form factor. Make sure you use an SSD to take advantage of the new fast sata interface.

I got rid of my X61's a while back, I've standardised on X200 series now; X200, 201, and 220. Better processors, and more ram, especially in the X220 which can take 16GB. Not quite as small and dinky as the X61, but they've fixed the "hot palm rest" problem that I got fed up with on the X61.
