x250 plugged display ignored

When I plug a display into the minidisplay port it's not recogised. I have to reboot to access it.

How do I enable plugging without reboot?
Is hald still needed? https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/...d-in-after-x-org-is-running.75622/post-465526
