Solved X failed after upgrading to 11.2

Hi

After upgradding to 11.2, the system didn't booted . I have followed some threads, thus I enabled sc in /boot/loader.conf
Code:
kern.vty=sc
System started fine! But lauching X failed.
Code:

I specified the bus id according to the above well-known ouput; it didn't work.

Some informations about the video card
pciconf -lv | grep -A4 vga
Code:

    vendor     = 'Intel Corporation'
    device = 'Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series Graphics & Display'
    class      = display
    subclass   = VGA

I dont know if a list of installed video drivers could help
Code:

xf86-video-scfb-0.0.4_7            =

Thank you for your help!

[ 8118.150] (==) Using config directory: "/usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"
For testing, you should remove everything from /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory.
It is generally not neccessary to define output device, screens or the like when using kernel modesetting driver!
Xorg does that on it's own very well. Try to start Xorg now.

II.
If it's still not starting...
info: [drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
This line alone, without any further output, looks like you are loading /boot/kernel/i915kms.ko on startup, but it didn't attach.
Can you confirm that?

For your 2014 Atom, this should be the right driver as it got something Haswell or IvyBridge like graphics core.
Is i915kms.ko listed when you type kldstat?

If not, try loading it to see what happens # kldload i915kms

I removed a 10-keyboard.conf (fr settings) from /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d but it doesn't work.
i915kms and drm2 have been loaded.

thanks for your time

Ok, the keyboard config doesn't do any harm, just move it back.

Did the driver attach when you used FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE?
It's a bit weird, that the driver does not attach.
There are only 2 things I could think of.

1. The update went wrong.
Run freebsd-version -ukr
It should show 3 times FreeBSD 11.2-RELEASE-p4

or

2. In early driver versions there where sometimes the pciids missing for graphics devices/CPUs that were supported so that the driver wouldn't attach.
(I experienced that myself)
For that reason, I wrote a script some time ago that checks your CPU's pciid, downloads the driver sources and matches them against each other.
It would check for both, the i915kms drivers, the one in the base system, and the new one from ports (which you shouldn't be needing).

If you want, go to post #5, in the following thread:
https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/...or-intel-integrated-graphics-with-xorg.66732/
The script is in the second code block.
You can run it from your home directory, can be run as normal user, it doesn't touch anything on your system.

OK so that was faulty info. I guess SCFB is built in now to the Xorg metapackage. Xorg-minimal would be needed to ditch it.
How about we help you get your vt(4) terminal back.
So from what I gather you had a working vt(4) terminal and lost it on upgrade to FreeBSD-11.2-RELEASE.
Guessing you fell back on sc(4).
I suggest you look at all the various tweaks for a vt(4) terminal.
gop comes to mind.

Remove x11-drivers/xf86-video-scfb leads xorg-7.7_3 and xorg-drivers-7.7_5 to be deinstalled. So
I didn't remove it. I guess reinstalling xorg causes xf86-video-scfb to be reinstalled

1. Uninstall xorg meta package. You propably have a driver conflict. The Xorg meta package just pulls all the 300+MB stuffs with some problamatic bitmap fonts too.
2. Install following
x11-fonts/font-alias
x11-fonts/font-cursor-misc
x11/setxkbmap
x11-fonts/urwfonts
x11/xbindkeys
x11/xdotool
x11/xev
x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev
x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard
x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel // If intel
x11-drivers/xf86-video-openchrome
x11/xinit
x11/xkill
x11/xmodmap
x11/xorg-minimal
x11/xrandr
x11/xrdb
x11/xset
x11/xsetroot
x11/xterm
x11/xwd

Well done :)
In theory the driver in base should support your graphics hardware.
Good to see my script still could help someone.

Thank you k.jacker. This is true of FreeBSD12 RC1 as well, probably not news for you but others might find confirmation to be helpful.
