WLAN recommendation, M.2 E-Key vs USB

I'm building a box based on the AsRock DeskMini X300, which has an empty M.2 E-key slot for a WLAN module.
Alternatively, I might use a WLAN USB stick. Price is rather unimportant. I'm more interested in support for FreeBSD (13 and up) out-of-the-box, i.e. I load a kernel module, frob a file or two in /etc and get connectivity to the hot spot my cable modem provides (downstream 250 Mbit/s).
Any success stories for either method welcome. As are failure stories--so I know what trouble to expect. Thanks.

I have a bunch of little USB wifi dongles which technically work in FreeBSD, but they are very bad at picking up the signal because they have no real antenna. Your M.2 mounted card will presumably have access to an antenna. That would be much better.
