Screenlets needs gnome (I built it on my FreeBSD machine and I try to create a port for this too)
adesklets are officially dead
Superkaramba needs KDE

Any widgets engine for xfce4?

Why not give conky a try if you need a lightweight one? I see that conky can be configured to a very beautiful one.

4 years...I just tried it for 4 days. lol. Well, regarding your question, I've searched the Google and found the so-called google-gadgets, which requires a bit qt libraries though. It's been ported to FreeBSD quite a long time. Follow it: deskutils/google-gadgets.
