There is a sysctl for that:
sysctl hw.acpi.battery

This too:
acpiconf -i 0

But I want the value to be displayed in the status bar :(

I found I didn't need the path= statement in /usr/local/etc/i3status.conf. The following works fine for me:
Code:
order += "battery 0"

battery 0 {
   format = "%status %percentage %remaining"
   integer_battery_capacity = true
   low_threshold = 15
   threshold_type = percentage
}

Mine looks like this:
Code:
battery 0 {
        format = "%status %percentage %remaining %emptytime"
        last_full_capacity = true
        integer_battery_capacity = true
        low_threshold = 10
        threshold_type = percentage
        hide_seconds = true
        format_down = " No bat"
        status_unk = " "
        status_chr = " "
        status_bat = " "
        status_full = " "
}
