What work best on FreeBSD?

Reading many threads on this forum, i concluded that the KDE is best solution on FreeBSD. But KDE is too large, with many unnecessary ports for me. With Gnome many have a lot of trouble, and i began to think about XFCE. What you thinkg what currently working better on a latest FreeBSD version, is that Gnome, XFCE or something else? Is it posible to install XFCE, openoffice etc. without gnome ports?

I reckon you'll have to make your own mind up on that one. However, do bear in mind that pretty much all of the DM's have "lite" versions where you can install a sensible base and then add additional parts as/if needed. KDEMultimedia/KDEdevelop/KDEnetwork as examples.
 
KDE is the best... at using up disk space.
xfce is the best... at not quite being GNOME.
icewm is the best... at looking nearly sorta kinda looking like Windows 95.
twm is the best... at being installed by default.

Many people just use wome windows manager + taskbar/launcher with needed apps.

I for example use openbox/wbar/conky/tint2 and do not need anything else.
 
I have always been a fan of fluxbox and enlightenment (e16)

Though awesome and dwm are also nice.

Of course the lower level and light weight you get the more you'll want to script your own customizations.
 
In other words: this is quite an impossible question to answer, so this thread is likely to become huge and pointless. Try out some window/desktop managers, and pick the one you like.
