You know cvs has a man page right?

Having said that, I believe up is short for update, although I can't find clear confirmation of that in the man page. The rest of those options are all covered though so I'll leave the rest as an exercise in reading man pages.

Also don't bother with CVS anymore, you're not going to learn revision control the proper way with it. Use GIT instead, here's a good starter:
