My recent reply to this threadwas moderated and removed because of this photo.

I posted a cartoon photo showing a BSD devil making love to a Linux Pinguin.

Questions:
  • Which rules did the post violate? ( I believe that my punctuation and grammar were correct )
  • Do we want to live in a sterilized environment?
Food for more thinking!

  • Who gets to judge if a post violates more the general rules than another post?

Merry Christmas to all.

I think in respect of McKusick, any use of the BSD Daemon mascot which is inappropriate is frowned upon.

In other words, it sounds like any depiction of Beastie being nasty to the Linux penguin simply riles up the Linux fanbois too much and I wouldn't take the removal too personally ;)

Some people are more puritan and/or easily offended than others. Personally I find the removal somewhat overzealous, but that's just me and there are probably more sensitive souls whose feelings need to be taken into account too. At some point someone has to decide what's acceptable and what's not. I'd much rather have the moderators correct crappy formatting (I actually miss DD) than censor funny pictures, but hey.

I deleted that post. I considered removing it when I first saw it; in a thread about a "hate campaign against BSD" it was questionable. I shook my head and left it. Then it was reported by a user.

If you're looking for a specific rule, #6 in the Rules of the road mentions two or three things that apply.

I did not moderate this post, but @kpedersen is right about McCusick stating that he does not like to see the mascot used in a disrespectful manner (http://www.mckusick.com/beastie/mainpage/copyright.html), and I guess the nature/intent of the depiction could be covered by forum rule number 6. I'll admit that the pic makes me chuckle on a personal level, but these forums are not on that personal level. It's the calling card of the FreeBSD operating system. (Oh, and "making love to" is quite the euphemism here ..)

I think it is a bit unrespectabe against a cusin work, however I think it was posted it only for fun. I like the picture of bbzz (I guess) with M5N gui and FreeBSD girl (very fun/very hot). I hope people on this forum understand the poster joke.

That picure that is referenced is one of the more famous ones. Today these kids have 4chan or reddit with meme generators. They will never know what's an irc channel or usenet without a google viewer.

In all honesty I don't know why they don't use that joke bsd screwing penguin as the logo for the mashups like GNU/kFreeBSD or what not. Actually having the gnu donkey head provide a hippie style threesome would make a grand trifecta.

In all honesty we need some humor in our life. Especially when it comes to threads about "Hate Campaigns".

What really bothers me is that this photo might have not triggered the report that wblock@ refers to.

After reading the Rules of the the road, I started wondering if wishing Merry Christmas falls under that category too.

Best Regards to all.

I *personally* think the picture is fine. But DutchDaemon summed it up well in his reply. With such a small group of regular posters on these forums it is easy to forget that the forums are not *ours* to run as we see fit.

I think the posted link clears up the matter beyond any doubt; we could be infringing on the original artist's wishes. To the OP: I really hope you don't read too much into this saga. I've found your contributions to this forum valuable and it would be a shame to have a disgruntled forum member over such a small issue.

Not at all! I believe in Democracy and as such we have to follow certain rules. I just feel that it is my obligation sometimes to question how some of those rules are applied.

With all due respect my intention was not to offend but to humor.

What to do in situations such as Phoronix attack campaign? Can be apply right for self-defense of the community exercised for their members against another attack from outside? Can still be regulated? I do not find it in the rules.

I found the image vulgar and unbecoming of this board. You are known by the company you keep and showing sex acts by the mascots, or any kind of porn, is immature, much less professional.

My sentiments, exactly. The moderators have been perfectly reasonable in their explanations and I do understand their considerations, but this one sentence has been haunting me for a while:

Personally, I find that quite disconcerting. As the very first paragraph of this sticky points out, we're all supposed to be adults here. Although I'm not entirely insensitive to other people's feelings, I'm inclined to think that someone here needs to take a laxative, grab a good book and head for the toilet(*). Being that tightassed cannot be good for one's health.

Ad (*): Yes, I said toilet. Not some euphemism like "little boys' room", but toilet. And I didn't even say loo, john, can or crapper. :e

As I thought people would gather, it was me that reported it. It was vulgar, childish and degrading to the FreeBSD community and this board. If such behavior continues to turn this place into a Windows forum, I'll leave.

I know there are a few here that remember the original(?) FreeBSD forum that became so overburdened with porn, spam and childishness that it was abandoned and the mature members formed their own board (daemonforums.com).

I've noticed far too much rank behavior over the last few weeks and mostly since the repetitive negative comments about FreeBSD coming from Linux trolls. Posting porn and thinking that's fine adult behavior here drags everyone into the gutter and, if that's where this board is heading, have at it because I won't be here.

I am not planning into engaging in a flame exchange with you but this is the second time in this thread that you criticize my post using rather harsh words.

Your problem is that you have no sense of humor. You are probably the type of person who does not mind watching on TV a guys head exploding like a water mellon. You would get scandalized though by watching the breasts of a woman.

Because you have a very short memory let me remind you that the reason why the bsdforums.org became like this is because the original owners disappeared, registration could not be controlled by the mods therefore the place became a spam haven.

Fortunately, not everybody feels that way and some people do have a sense of humour.

If that's porn, then I'm the President of the Galaxy.

Humor is highly subjective, and if you find you've offered offense when you thought you were being funny, the adult response is to apologize and move on. As the OP did. Let's try to err on the side of respecting other people's feelings.
