User without password / is gnome bad for me?

Installed FreeBSD for the first time today (used v10.0). Went with Gnome2 by random due to cluelessness. Got as far as the login window in Gnome and found out that it needs a password for user-login even if the user's password is null and not required in FreeBSD. Is there a way to make it so a password isn't required in the login window after Gnome launches, or am I forced to have passwords for all my users?

That being said....I was reading through the forums a little and hearing that that Gnome 2 on FreeBSD is a bit "broken". Is Gnome ok or is there another GUI that will suit me better as a beginner?

Thanks in advance :)

Gnome has problems, I recommend you use Xfce, very usable & easy to use.

As to passwords, you should be able to, however, it is more secure to use one, even if it is only your initials.

Edit: Also, just in case, please don't be tempted to operate your system as the root operator, it can be very dangerous

Thanks for the tips. Operate my system as root operator... doesn't that mean I shouldn't install xorg, xfce, and update port list as root?
