Usenet on FreeBSD - current provider performance and retention (2025)

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently started testing Usenet setups on FreeBSD again, mainly for binary archiving, automation with NZBGet/SABnzbd inside jails, and bandwidth stability over IPv6.

It’s been a while since I last used Usenet seriously, and I was surprised to see how much retention and SSL performance have improved. Most major providers now support both OpenVPN and WireGuard configs that work out of the box on FreeBSD.

I’m curious if anyone here is still using Usenet in 2025 and what your setup looks like - any optimizations for header retrieval, connection pooling, or IPv6 throughput?

Here are a few providers I tested or reviewed recently (all offer FreeBSD-compatible configs and 6,000+ days of retention):

  • Newshosting — long retention, consistent SSL speeds in Europe and North America.
  • Eweka — very stable IPv6 connections; supports automation tools easily.
  • UsenetServer — same backbone as above, with optional VPN configs for BSD systems.

Would love to hear if anyone has benchmarked these or has experience with newer indexing solutions and automation on FreeBSD.
