Is it possible to upgrade from an i386 version of FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE to the amd64 version, or at least can I backup anything I have installed and then restore after an installation of amd64 over the top of the previous installation?
You can do it with a second disk that you use temporarily to hold a copy of your current i386 system. You then cross-compile an amd64 world/kernel and install that over the second disk and the second disk will have your system upgraded to amd64.
I decided against trying to upgrade a working installation and installed a fresh copy of the amd64 release on a USB stick - it was only for test purposes anyway.
