Unexpected Behaviour with usb storage - memory sticks.

Hello All. I am new to freebsd. When I plug in a usb memory stick or external usb drive I get some bold lines on the screen that tell me about what I just plugged in. Then it stops. I need to hit enter to get my prompt back. I followed the instructions on the foundation website to install a desktop. Plugging in a usb device with the desktop running gives me a confused desktop. I am using 13.1. I have also done the updates. When I installed I added the user to the wheel video and operator groups. I have the same problems on 2 machines. Please , what have I configured wrong. I have also tried searching here and the net in general but my search terms did not return anything I could use.

Thank you for your time.

Sounds like you're talking about the text-mode screen of ttyv0 after boot, which shows USB (among other) kernel messages going to /var/log/messages and dmesg, rather than a graphics-mode desktop screen?

If so, don't login on ttyv0 but first switch to another with Alt-Fn - where n is 2-8 (by default) or Alt-Ctrl-Fn from a graphics desktop.

For example, I login on ttyv1 (Alt-F2) as root or ttyv7 (Alt-F8) as user, next to Alt-F9 for the graphic desktop when used, but use whatever is comfortable for you.

Then you can check what's been posted on ttyv0 at any time by visiting Alt-F1.

If that's not what you meant, please show what you did.

I assume so too.

In my opinion, mounting USB external drives is one of the major hurdles when switching to FreeBSD. By default there is no automount, and even in some popular DEs, an automount is not mandatory. E.g. if you want to use gvfs/bsdisks for Thunar, Caja or Dolphin, you have to enable dbus. Or you choose DSBMD/DSBMC, a great auxiliary tool. Or you can use vermadens automount or...

Very confusing for a FreeBSD beginner ?

What is a "confused desktop"? Can you post a screenshot?
Confused desk top was poor wording sorry about that. When I plugged in the usd drive and then opened the file manager the whole desktop stopped responding. I could not even log out. Since this was after many config setting experiments I would not be able to tell you what I did or in what order. I have since done a fresh install so I cannot duplicate the problems. Lets call this one user error ;)

What I am going to do is put ghostbsd on one machine and then freesbsd on another side by side on a desk. Since ghostbsd handles the usb sticks I hope I can compare config files and figure this out. I could just use the ghostbsd but I like what I see about the whole freebsd project and website. Plus if I want to leave Linux behind for good I need/want to learn all I can.

Thank you all for your time
