vbox Trying out various OS's in virtualbox

Some of my relative are sick of Windows, some are already on Linux. We have had a little OS install fest in virtualbox & running the virtual machines for a few weeks to see what they liked. I moved away from Linux to FreeBSD years ago for sanity. I am not surprised the forums are getting new converts & questions about FreeBSD it just works. The VM's we setup included Linux Mint installed great relatives liked it going to use it, also installed Ubuntu, Cachyos, Artix, Void, FreeBSD & OpenIndiana. The gamer of the family liked Cachyos & is sticking with it. I liked how the installed allowed ZFS & no problems installing & updating. Don't know if we have been unlucky but void linux & Artix both had problems updating with dependencies. Nobody liked that & put them off. The linux users likes Void for its speed. The Solaris administrator in the family like FreeBSD, OpenIndiana & Void linix. All members like FreeBSD's easy setup but wished for GUI like linux. All liked how when FreeBSD was installed with XFCE & the usual firefox, Libreoffice they all could just get on with it with no problems. Hopefully i can convince them of the many merits of FreeBSD, easier for me to provide support to them if they have problems rather that multiple linux distros. The linux users were impressed with ZFS after i showed them BE's snapshots. I have not done much with OpenIndiana myself it took 30 minutes to install, good ZFS etc however reminds me of linux 10 years ago.

All in all a good look at the operating systems available at the moment.

Tip: GhostBSD. It's not FreeBSD and as such it's off-topic for this particular forum, but it's -at this point- as close as you're going to get to a turnkey desktop derived from FreeBSD. There's also movement in FreeBSD itself to provide it with a GUI installer and a default desktop option around KDE Plasma. Not sure if they're going to make that for 15.0 though, last I checked it was rough around the edges but I'm not following closely so who knows.

Was going to use GhostBSD but when we made the vm's on their hardware they did not have the 8Gb minimum for GhostBSD. They did like how FreeBSD worked & do have 8Gb total so could install direct to the hardware.

Its a crazy time at the moment family sick of BSOD, malware, viruses & no support on Windows 10. The gamer's in the family have friends who switched to Linux for steam & GOG & are following suit.
Office workers in the family are just sick of Windows & read comments in magazines about Linux & asked me as the family IT department about it.

As for me i just finally switched the last Linux server at work to FreeBSD 14.3, just totally sick of Linux problems. I loved Linux 20 years ago i light in the darkness, now more of a buggy systemd hobbyos. If the Linux users are having the same issues i have had, i am not surprised the FreeBSD forums a getting new users.

When we set up a FreeBSD vm we only had 4Gb free for the Vm. GhostBSD's website asks for a minimum of 8Gb when installing i think it must create a ram disk & the pc we used only had 8Gb ram total so they would have to do a bare metal install, which at the time they did not want to do. They probably will try it in the future because they liked FreeBSD. As basic pc users they are used to gui programs & hand holding.

On my lunch i tried a GhostBSD install in virtualbox the installer creates a 4294967296 memdisk so that is why they are asking for a minimum of 8Gb.
