Or type ctrl+Alt+F2 and log in on the virtual terminal to do the job. type ctrl+Alt+F9 to get back to the GUI.

So the post I was looking for but wasn't there yet, how to "do the job" of adding the user to the wheel group:

pw groupmod wheel -m USER
(Replace USER with the desired username!)
