Hi all,

Just trying to get some of my legacy systems upgraded (using freebsd-update(8)). Managed to get to 7.4 without issue (really surprised about that). Then going from 7.4->9.2 using freebsd-update(8). It seems to be fine except it hangs on boot always here:

I have a feeling this might be related to the Legacy USB support, however on the serial console I get to the ROM BIOS Setup Util (it's an HP360R2 or R3 - (P4 3G)). Unlike other BIOSs it gives a RBSU prompt which is extremely difficult to navigate as the console does not overwrite previously written characters with a whitespace when refreshing the screen... so I am unable to locate the parameter to see if the USB is set to legacy or not.

Now I don't use USB on the server at all, so is there a way to disable it completely (without rebuilding the kernel) .. ie in device.hints? Currently I have managed to get it to boot by using the boot configuration menu and disabling ACPI and booting Safe Mode (option 5, then options 1 & 2)

On what kind of hardware are you running this? Have you checked to see if there's a BIOS update? Sometimes those help.

As in the previous.. it's a HP DL360R2 (or R3) and no BIOS updates are available.

Actually this is a similar problem: https://forums.freebsd.org/viewtopic.php?&t=9586 ... I need to do the same, different hardware, same reason..

So if I have read it correctly it might be that the hang is on the ohci driver load, so moving the module out of the way should solve it (or make it unbootable)..

Question can the usb module be disabled in the same way? (I suspect it cannot as the kernel conf say 'required' next to the USB driver.)

OK, more progress... managed to get the menu driven BIOS interface enabled over the console.. no USB legacy support.

Set:

(don't know whether they are even valid, but thought I'd try)

In the BIOS Config set the USB controller to disabled (there is no USB config options so just disabled the embedded controller)

Ok solution found (posting so others may note).

First - disable the Embedded USB controller in the BIOS configuration.
Second - edit the /boot/device.hints and add the following:

Ensure any array controllers are enabled (disabling the array controllers will also result in a hang when trying to probe CISS devices.)

Boot with verbose mode to verify.. my boot now shows:
