So what's next after AI?

From Big Data to Cloud Computing to AI; what do you think is next?

I predict the next trend; Disappointment Computing. Where the next tech hype bubble will be as nonsensical and idiotic as the last.

Thoughts? Opinions?

On a tangent, when our autonomous robot friends come to market; I wonder if dousing it with water will result in abrupt termination. Someone should test this at some point.

Cryptocurrency.
To me signs are already set to move it from speculation's kindergarten to the attempt to make it become the real money for everybody.
  • it needs giant amounts of new infrastructure, so lots of hardware can be sold
  • it needs even more perverted amounts of additional energy
  • it feeds the greed by the believe it multiplies itself just by being it
  • claims are already demarcated, so there is no real chance for new start-up joining to also ride the gravy train
So investors from different kinds of businesses are in.
  • it's tech. only few really understand it, so the majority can believe in it
  • it's (relatively) new (to most common people), so even more can believe in a fantastic future
  • it feeds the greed by the believe to multiply oneselves money just by having it
  • it's tempting to everybody can become a millionaire without any work, just join by buying a graphics card
So the majority of morons are also in.
And the best part is:
  • it's already certain it's doomed to fail
So it will be done.

I was thinking that next big thing in computing with be a brain interface for entertainment / phone interface. A lot of people are already dependent on AI to write for them, think for them etc. So naturally the computer, human brain interface is the next step. :D

There are tons of commercials and ads everywhere now about going to school to be an AI expert or cybersecurity or crypto guru. "Get a great new job that pays well in months!" they exclaim.

This reminds me of the time, back in the 1980s or so, when the ads preached you needed to go to a tech school to get into computer electronics. Control Data was the biggest one and I taught at CDC part-time for a while. The school got mostly lower income people by the hundreds and out of all those I taught, I'm only aware of four who got a job as field techs and only through my own personal contacts.

And let's not forget "get into the wonderful world of broadcasting!"

This looks like a post from 2015 :) mining on GPUs is not nearly as profitable as back then and is slowly dying out, as well as general hype about crypto currencies, leaving only the useful stuff it brought (all IMO, of course, I'm not really into crypto).

You're right insofar that this is partially why I said it's doomed. But that's not the interesting part (Still I just recently stumbled over an advertisment to join my GPU into some cloud-computing on mining.)
I was referring to banks, companies, and politicians discussing to invest into that future technology.

Edit:
I once had a Bitcoin "purse"(?) installed over 25 years ago, just to take a peek at it, when it was brandnew. If I put 50,- in that time, maybe I was now having a Porsche 😅, but in those days 50,- were way too much for me to risk it on something as certain as the lottery. Also neither my CPU/GPU, nor my internet connection was powerful enough to earn enough money by mining to pay the light and internet bill for what the stunt had cost me.
So: "Deinstall" - "Really?" - "Yes!" and that was my complete Bitcoin adventure.
And I like to keep it that way.

I'm hoping it will be "quantum computing" in primordial form, suitable for consumers. Perhaps some Quantum GPU?

Though maybe there will be one or two hypes between now and then.
Ha, you are way behind - IBM already had SERVERLESS quantum computing: https://www.ibm.com/quantum/blog/qiskit-serverless

I've been in this field for almost 30 years now, but I'm still amazed with how much buzzword-bullshit marketing droids can come up...

This is pretty cool. I was still kind of hoping for something that I can have in my hands, plug into my PC and play with.

Indeed. But it is worthwhile getting some shares in i.e D-Wave or the next hype and gain beer money from *their* buzzword bullshitting the industry.

Can you spell Singularity? I certainly wouldn't want chips any where inside of my body. I do see a market for them for people with disabilities however. Like, restoring bodily functions or human senses with something planted just under the skin maybe.

I've got it! Computerless Computing.. where's my VC money?!

By the way, I always thought that AI were hype, but I am quite impressed of grok and still think there is a trick behind ...

That's definitely good. Not in an "Upgrade" kind of way though
The insects rebuild the world in their image, using a hive model.
You mean like having some sort of personal device, permanently connected to social media feeding them brain rot 24/7? I think this already happened.

Only if she is artificial.
Blow up ones don't count.

Yes. Though this freaks me out:

"become the real money for everybody" - maybe in year 2900-3000. See the size of transaction database until now - it is 99.9% speculations. Then imagine that 3 billion people make 20 crypto transactions (real, not speculations) every day... What will be the database after 1 year and how long time will take every transaction (maybe 1 hour or more?)

I'm sure with the proper amplification a sensor could be used over the Medulla. It would require some serious calibration and some kind of weird head harness so that it didn't move a micron lol But it's possible!
