Solved snd_hda: line-in jack does not work

Hello,

On a laptop using Intel HDA audio, I cannot get any sound from the line-in jack.
The line-out jack works fine, as well as the built-in speakers and microphone.

Programs using audio input let me choose between /dev/dsp0 which gives nothing, and /dev/dsp1 which gives the built-in microphone input.
From what I can read in sysctl the line-in jack should be connected to dsp0 but it does not work.

Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

Hiya. I saw this hadn't been replied to so I figured I'd give my input. Disclaimer: I'm a basic FreeBSD user, so my methods aren't particularly high-brow.

I've been using audio/umix for my volume controls, I had to fiddle with the IGain setting b/c it had been set to 0 as a default (any value >0 enabled audio pass-thru from line in).

Anyhow, best of luck. At the very least hopefully someone else sees that this thread's been bumped so that they can give you a more cohesive answer.

snd_hda(4) is highly configurable and differs from Linux where the default configuration, say for a particular laptop, is specified by codecs. In FreeBSD the available inputs/outputs are interrogated at boot and generally grouped by location. The man page, linked, tells you how to reassign a particular nwid. It is possible to have both the bezel mic and the 1/8 jack mic active and multiplex the sound.

This also means that there is no one way to configure your particular laptop.
For example: Onboard speakers and bezel mic as defaults. Jack sense Headphones to mute Onboard speakers while continuing to use bezel mic. Alternatively separate headphones and jack mic into a second group.

There have been a number of solved threads and it is possible that someone has done this for the make/model of laptop you have. Use the forum search function to browse.

Thank you both for answering.
In fact I eventually found out a solution myself but forgot to edit my post here.

I added the following to /boot/device.hints
hint.hdaa.0.nid15.config="as=0"
hint.hdaa.0.nid17.config="as=2 seq=0"
hint.hdaa.0.nid12.config="as=2 seq=15"

nid15 refers to a connector which is listed (device=Line-in conn=Jack ctype=1/8 loc=Ext-Rear) but does not exist on the laptop
nid17 is the built-in microphone
nid12 is the real input jack

So I disabled the fake line-in and grouped the built-in microphone with the real input jack.
I now have only one recording device (dsp0) which defaults to the built-in microphone and switches to the input jack when I plug something in.
